The Model A front spring shackle shouldn’t be laying against the spindle. They shouldn’t be near the spindle. The end to which the spring attaches should be towards the center of the car. Like 28phonebooth said, pictures would help.

Aftermarket axle? A lot are made shorter so the disk brake set ups did not move the tires out too far.

It sounds like maybe your spring needs resetting or you have an old axle with a different perch hole spacing and hence either your sproing or axle are not compatible with each other.
    It happens...
Then you have to know if your spring eyes have been reversed or the shackles are stock or something else??? Axles 1972_June_Street-Rodder_005.jpg Axles.jpg

check your spring is 29.25'' long and 1.75'' wide
    1929-1934

IF its 39.5'' long and 2'' wide then its for spring in front
    35-40

what you need to do its go to the sids axle website and learn
the perch widths and king pin distances
only then can you cross reference them against 4'' dropped axles that are aftermarket or modified originals

IF the spring is ANY different from the above, either 31 ish o2 33 ish, its aftermarket

you have to learn perch distances

  10. There are so many ways to get in trouble with what you're trying to do. Without photos and numbers, it's tough to try and advise how to fix it. Sounds like your parts combo isn't a good one.
