Projects '40 Ford hood latch. What is this piece??

What the hell is this little lever thingy? All is does is lock the hood lever in the open position. Why is it there other than to piss me off?

It keeps the hood latch from locking until the hood is closed.

 

Four years later, did you remove it?

 

Yep, it zipped it off of there a few minutes after the post. I am the only dude who shuts my hood, so I just remember to open the latch before I hold the hood down, then close the latch. I don't remember why it kicked my ass so bad back then, but it sure did.

late to the party but may be will help someone in the future. I put a stainless cover on top of my grille put a small rubber circle to hit this

 

After going to the trouble to hand fabricate that piece, I removed it. I much prefer the latch operation without it. I have wondered lately if that hold open function lever is the cause of so many broken hood ornaments.
