    Hi all,

I picked up a stalled project...39 Master 85. Lots done and lots to do...I am excited to get this on the road. It is stock and cool! I have restored an old mustang and F100, but ran across this Chevy and it was too good of a deal to p*** up.

I have run into a couple of problems and could use some help.

Question #1 and the worst of the two...someone along the way looks to have stripped out the drivers side exterior door handle screw, then hammered in a roll pin...The door handle was missing the Ferrell and barely worked. I was able to get it out, along with the latch ***embly. The br*** br*** part is toast...I have attached pictures of the horror!! Can this be fixed or are door latch ***emblies available? It doesn't look repairable to me. I am hopeful...but help!!!

Second question...is there a trick to removing the gas tank on these? The filler neck is hanging it up on the inner fender...I don't want to bend the inner fender if I don't have to.

Thanks for your help! #1 is the one that has me stressed right now :-/

Welcome to the HAMB from Illinois.

I'm not familiar with your questions, but I understand this is a good source for parts/info:

If you don’t have a lathe to make a new one. And you don’t know any machinists maybe you could get a bushing from Ace or Lowes and make one.

I'll be taking mine out to upgrade. You can have the old one if it's any good.

    Thanks all...!!

SS327, it isn't a bushing, it is a swing arm/mechanism...I did some additional research and found that Chevys of the 40's used to sell a rebuild kit with it in it. No more though...I called them today based on PPrather's suggestion.

i7083...I would be happy to grab yours! When are you upgrading? Are you installing the bear claw type? Just curious.

Also, is the hood for the sedan the same as the business coup? There is a guy local to me selling three 38-42's...I talked to him on the phone today...he is only selling the full cars, but there are some good parts (based on pictures...I want to go take a look).

Yep, that is the kit. Really odd that chevys of the 40s shows it as not produced. The Filling Station has them. Shipping is a bit high. Which set is in your picture? Thanks!

I can pull it any time. I'm going to the claw latches sold by a HAMBer. Where are you located? I could use a hood, and a trunk lid for a coupe...

Hi I am in Layton Utah. 84040 zip. I would be interested when you pull them.

Right now the guy with the cars is saying he wants to sell by the car. It would be cool if he caved on selling some parts. Here are some pics. He told me one has a bad chop top job. Two have mustang front ends. One has a GMC 4 cylinder. Prices he gave me over the phone are 3k for the one with the motor and 1200 for the other two each. He needs to get rid of them…people come see the cars, say they will come back and then don’t…that is what he shared over the phone. I haven’t seen them in person yet. He comes across rough but warms up and is helpful. I can share his number. Lots of good parts.

That's quite a long haul from Missouri. I'll try to get to the shop and pull them out tomorrow.

I also recently finished my '39 Chev Master Deluxe Opera Coupe project. Far from stock on my drivetrain, but all the body and doors remain stock type. I am very fortunate to live within blocks of the best supplier of good used old Chevy parts in the USA. DiOrio's Old Car Parts has been my go to place since the late 60's, and Joe Jr. has run it since his dad retired. They will have that part as a good used item if you give them a call. Tell Rod that Vall sent you.
