Right at the very top, my machine shows . . . 1963 NHRA NATIONALS Indianapolis . . . and then two pictures of S&S cars.
1959 Riverside Raceway Archie Ary Hello, Archie Ary was tearing up the local So Cal drag strips in the month of December. As part of the Westcoast contingent, he was one of the stalwarts. His race against Don Garlits was “not in the cards” as the saying goes. We recorded what we thought was a first round win for the Westcoast racers in this East vs. West huge drag racing event in 1959. The biggest names in drag racing from all over the USA were in attendance. WDIFL 1959: Garlits vs Archie Ary Riverside Raceway December 1959: From L. Schelin: "…That is Archie racing Garlits...the famous "burn down" race....Archie was so excited he had a chance to race Garlits that he pushed down first. He made the turn around at half track, push started, and went to the line..." "Garlits took his time slowly pushing to half track, made the turn around, and push started towards the starting line. While Garlits was doing that, Archie was burning up waiting at the line. By the time Garlits staged, Archie's engine was so hot he couldn't make a decent p***. ...he said, "I've learned my lesson, always be the last to stage." I looked around a bit on the ‘net and couldn’t find any elapsed times listed for Archie Ary. Yeah, Garlits snookered him but how compe***ive would he have been against Don’s 8.77 average?
