Hot Rods Hurst Mounts and the sincere Imitators

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SilverJimmy, Mar 4, 2022.

  1. Can we PLEASE see some photos on this?!

  2. Hi Retson, I haven’t made my mount yet, hence the interest, the only picture I could put up was of an A timing cover showing the mounting castings, is that what you are after?

The general consensus is to run a mid plate at the bell housing. You could fab something simple just to take some of the load off and help distribute the weight.

Retson, this is on a B motor I have that made me think about making a Hurst style mount,
This is what got me thinking (maybe over thinking) about the hurst mounts just using the timing cover bolts and possibly crushing the gaskets causing them to loosen up. Obviously they are fine but hopefully my thought pattern is obvious when you compare the way these are mounted.
I’m not sure if these are oem style or just something made to fit the sprung style A and B motor mount tabs.

  5. Mid mount also helps with torque reaction. Useful if the engine mount bokts are closer to center.

On the early Olds, the front mount angle bracket attaches to dedicated threaded bosses along the bottom of the timing cover, the 4 bolts only hold the mount to the cast iron timing cover. There is a rectangular bonded rubber mount that bolts to the bottom of the angle bracket. The four bolts do not hold the timing cover to the block. There are nine or ten bolts that hold the timing cover to the block. Some Pontiacs and Ford Y-blocks also used a mount on the timing cover.
In the rear, Olds used a bellhousing side mount. One on each side, bolted to the sub-bellhousing and attaching to a removable stamped steel crossmember. They make up a three point mounting system. I would not run an aluminum case transmission with only the Hurst front mount and the rear tail shaft housing mounts. The cast iron hydro would probably be ok with a Hurst on the front and a fabricated mount on the tail housing. I did it that way on my Olds powered ‘47 Ford coupe.
I thought I had a picture of the Olds timing cover, I guess not. Here’s the side mount, very similar to a ‘55-‘57 Chevy. (Bottom transmission)

I’ve got a Hurst front mount to put a Y-block in a shoebox….somewhere in the barn!

I’m thinking about adding mid mounts.

  11. I know this post is about Hurst mounts, but C-T Automotive also made engine mounts, but not as many types as Hurst. In my 1961 Cragar catalogue, the C-T mounts are shown.

nick, Since this thread includes "sincere imitators", which includes C-T, would you scan those Cragar pages and post here?

enginemnt.jpg DSC04794.JPG My Hurst appreciation mount. 348 in a 40. It turns out I could probably have used a genuine one, but hey ho. It does move the engine forward an inch or so, giving me a little more fire wall clearance.

  15. Founds some NOS mounts for the Nailhead in my old RPU. I'd hate to have to hunt for this stuff today.

I have had a small collection of Hurst mounts over the years. I'm down to two SBC mounts.

Here's the one in my car.

Nick sent me the catalog and I scanned the page with motor mounts. Here the part of the page that shows motor mounts:

  22. Since myself and many others always ask about stock pumps, here is a good shot of the spacers needed taken from my new 283 20220522_125123.jpg
