When pounding on the underside of the floorboards of my 1955 Chevy Hot Rod project, I noticed that some rust flakes and chunks were dropping out from inside the rocker panels.

So I need to need to figure out how to clean/ vacuum out the inside of the rocker panels and then I want to treat the inside surfaces with some kind of rust neutralizer.

I am considering just spraying the heck out of the rocker panels with OSPHO but I really want to first get the advice from the educated ones among us (if you think education is expensive then try ignorance).

So is OSPHO the product to use or do you recommend something else?

I also need a "spray wand" so does anyone have a suggestion for the make/model of wand to buy?

NOTE: I do not currently have a auto paint spray system so I am going to post on another thread my questions however the spray wand would be great if it would screw onto the tip of the spray gun.

    THANKS

    Bill

  2. Yes, you can hit it with a neutralizer. After you can coat it like the pros with auto body cavity wax, it is a spray.

  4. And does it SPRAY! Use caution and watch out for openings on the other end!

i had the same thing on my 55, thought i would ospho it and paint/coat it. I did this and while i was doing some body work i happened to notice a teensy pin hole in one rocker, super small. Yep, a tap and a 1/2" hole. My solution was simple-new rockers that eliminated any doubt. ---and the cost of materials to coat it as is adds up.

Neutralizers I know of require a rinse with clean water and thorough dry before any coatings are applied.
Doing so in a closed compartment can be difficult and some neutralizers may promote rust if not rinsed properly.
Coating over active rust can trap moisture which encourages more rust
You might consider opening an access window that would allow visual inspection of a process.

There are rust removers that contain zinc and do not require a water rince. I've been treating seams like this and after 20 years with this method and it's worked very well.

I wonder if you could spray Oshpo with a weed killer sprayer. (The kind you spray your garden with?)

My Old Power Wagon gets a good hosing down with used motor oil 2 x a year after the oil changes . I have a 3M Body Shuntz sprayer with a piece of pex tubing attached drilled for 360 * coverage . It drips for a few days , Park in the gravel part of my driveway , controls weeds also . I can notice oil leaching out of the cracks and rust everywhere after a bit . It has to slow down the cancer . I coat the frame and crossmembers also . Not sure you want to do a hot rod this way , but it’s cheap and works great .

Greg, A plant sprayer should work , if it doesn't work go to Harbor Freight and get an engine cleaning gun from Taiwan for ten bucks and you can spray rust remover wherever you like.

Be sure to apply that rust preventative to the top of the
inner front fender above the headlight buckets as 55's rust out there also.

I tried searching Fluid Film and got re-directed to the Grainger website. Can't find the product you showed. Can you show a link to the makers of Fluid Film, please?

Living where I do it is so nice to not have to deal with rust.....I don't miss Ohio at all...We use to say an exciting Friday night was setting on the porch and watching your car rust....

Can you name the products that you use, and maybe some links to them?

    Thanks for the advice.

What is the name of the wand? Does anyone have a link?

I use mastercoat rust remover/ metal prep with zinc which is the old Captain Lees formula. And then I followed up with the mastercoat permanent rust sealer , the slim version.
