Soaking the cylinder, letting it set for a week, then cranking on the crank pulley with your biggest breaker bar (with an extension pipe) is gonna exert WAY more force than a Black Cat or M80. Like others have said, the cylinder has to be closed.

On top of that, how do you know you've only got ONE stuck cylinder?

I just had this image of det cord going out to 6 M80s, and rigged to detonate in the proper firing order. :D:D:D

Also, if you did manage to get an explosion to loosen that cylinder, the stuck rings are going to completely trash the cylinder wall.

Firecrackers are only good for throwing down the storm drain and scaring the **** outta the neighbors. :p

If you could get one of these Railroad Torpedoes fitted in the hole, that would certainly break it loose. Back in '57 my oldest brother hit one with a hammer on our concrete front porch. I was 8 and standing close, he got powder burns, and both had our ears ringing for a week. Railroad Torpedo.jpg It's a small charge of Dynamite !

Mix some gas and ether and pour it down the dipstick tube and run a fuse from said tube. Light and run. Piston will come out the top of the block. Presto, head removed and pistons. :)

I would buy or borrow a porta-power pump. Knock the guts out of a spark plug and weld a pipe fitting to the steel part that's left. Turn the engine so the spark plug hole is at the top and fill the cylinder with oil instead of air. Attach the hose to the fitting and start pumping.

Don't know what size your bore is, but the area of a 4" bore is 12.57 square inches. Multiplied by 10,000 pounds per square inch is 125,700 pounds of force against the piston. If the valves close when you remove the rockers the piston should move.

    1. Remove the rockers for the cylinder.
    2. Remove spark plug.
    3. Fill cylinder with starting fluid.
    4. Replace spark plug.
    5. Extend the plug wire from your lawn mower to the spark plug on the Chevy 6.
    6. Turn on your video recorder.
    7. Pull the starting rope on your lawn mower.

I agree with the grease pump thing, I've seen it done.

It's been mentioned that the valves need to be closed, but also, if the piston is at bottom dead center (or top dead center for that matter) pressure is going to be way less effective, unless you already have the crank out and you're just trying to push the piston out the bottom. Ideally, you probably want that piston to be at half stroke, or maybe a little less so there's less volume in the cylinder to fill.

If I'm not mistaken, I think this was the punch line to an old joke that was so dirty, I'm ashamed to even think of it myself.

I think before trying to hydraulic the piston with grease/etc. I’d just pull the head, since it would have to come off anyways.
Lets say it works. Engine is now able to move a freely. Now your (not you, third person) are going to pull the head and try to clean up the mess.
Seems easier to get ahead of things, pull the head and see what you’re up against.

I think it's too late. It's sounds like he was using coke when he came up with this plan.

All I can think about is how those cartoon characters managed to get all that dynamite. They always seemed to have some laying around...

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
    Oh my gosh...

You know, it's not like it's the movie Flight of the Phoenix, when Jimmy Stewart has one last charge to start the engine with. :D

This beauty wouldn't budge after sitting for weeks with every concoction known to man. Marvel Mystery, PB Blaster, Acetone/ATF etc. Couldn't get any of them to budge. Resorted to a 3"Dia x 6"L cylindrical steel cutoff from a machine shop and a 20 lb sledge. Pounded the pistons down a skosh to break them loose and then drilled them and chiseled them out. Not sayin' this is any better than the explosive or hydraulic method.

Mix ATF and acetone. Use an oil can/w flex nozzle, put some in all cylinders, and give it 24 hours to penetrate. If it doesn't work, repeat. Use a breaker bar and socket and attempt to rotate the crankshaft pulley bolt.

In the movie "Flight of the Phoenix," a shotgun shell was used to fire up a radial aircraft engine. I don't know enough about vintage aircraft to recommend it. As far as car engines go, there have been millions/billions made since their inception. No doubt, people have tried all kinds of dumb things to either get them to run or to destroy them, often while under the influence. Some people will do anything for a laugh.

I've heard of people using dynamite to catch fish. The next time you need to pull your engine, try putting a few sticks under it.

Ok, my method to free stuck pistons.
Easier with flat tops, I use a slug of 1/2inch and tape up the edges. Then loosen up the caps that I can get to.
Slug is in top of the piston, then take my pneumatic rattle gun and go after the slug.
I’ve had to make a “ring” for domed pistons to have it sit better, then a slug on top of the ring.
Yes, after penetrating fluid has been used.
The shock of the rattling breaks the rings/piston loose from the cylinder.

They still need an overbore I just don’t want to pay the shop to tear them down.

  28. Some of those old radial engines used an explosive cartridge for starting. Strange, but true.....
