Projects Knowing When To Quit - Selling Advice

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by CAHotRodBoy, Aug 5, 2022.

  1. Oh, and since were also discussing dealing with the inevitable pile of parts and 'treasures' here's a thought.

In addition to selling and giving it away things ourselves, be sure to label everything you have so someone who has to deal with whatever is left after you're gone at least knows what it is. Better yet, include an estimated value of the part on the label. I've done that and also have binders that contain every receipt for every part I've ever bought so they can look up values (including pages I wrote myself itemising swap meet parts that didn't come with a receipt)

Finally, talk with close 'car guy' friends and find out who would actually welcome inheriting these parts.
I have a buddy who routinely sells parts online and will inherit everything I don't use or sell before I'm gone.
I expect he will get good value for these parts and appreciate that I left them to him.

  2. All the advice here is sound. But the bottom line is money comes and goes, but time just keeps going. You've already spent the money, don't mortage your time.

I'd say forget the paint job, go get the body and sell the whole mess as a kit that "just needs paint and ***embly".

  4. If the body is sitting on a rolling ch***is, you may be better off to separate the rebuilt ch***is and sell that by itself.

Well, it sounds like the majority here think I should have it painted. I tend to agree so I guess I'll get that done. I will travel down there to to trailer the car to the paint booth and have him squirt it. Then, I may have him put some of the trim back on. I have two complete sets of trim in good condition. I actually have quite a few duplicate parts as when I got the car, the seller had purchased a parts car and stripped it down.

Once the car is painted and trim installed I will probably go ahead and swap it tp the new frame. At that point, I'll have to decide what to do. I'm thinking once that is all done I might just keep it and finish it. Have to see how much more work will be required.

    Thanks for the advice.

Went through a similar reconing a few months ago. Since then I've been following the theory your never really poor unless you don't pay yourself. In other words, you need to do what's good for you. Having a load of projects is fun but having one you can enjoy is much better. What really matters is how many memories you can create while you can create them. Everything else is just ego.

I made the hard choice to really simplify my Vicky project. At 70 I both understand and support what you are doing. Somebody else will appreciate and give the Ford the attention it deserves. As a side note, I've always seem to do better in the long run flipping projects as they sit rather than finishing them as you seldom actually recover the involved costs. Just my opinion!
