Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by GTfastbacker, Aug 7, 2022.

  1. Gentlemen,

will i damage my 51 Merc jump starting with a 12V Battery?

It’s a 6V Car, pos. Ground, Alternator, stock voltage regulator.
    no Pertronix or other electronics,

    Thank you

My neighbor used to jump his 6v tractor with his pickup.

Have at it. It will turn faster. Amps will be 1/2 @ 2x volts. You'll wish you started on 12 all of the time. My 8N tractor had a perpetually dead battery. It was started with jumpers at 12V all of it's life. The starter worked when the tractor died. I'd be more worried about light bulbs, motors and such. Don't have anything on while you jump it. 4. Don’t do it if the 12v is attached to a modern vehicle. The battery by itself should be ok.
It won’t hurt the 6v starter. The issue would be with other stuff like bulbs.

A “running” modern vehicle is what your saying.

  7. Thank you Guys!

  8. True. I’d still disconnect the cables due to the Merc being positive ground. I’m supers***ious I’ve seen some weird stuff happen jumping off newer rides.

  9. All the good stuff said about, and be ready to put on/remove the jumper cables on/off the 6v battery quickly.

  10. I’ll probably get put into the stocks and stoned for this, but convert it to 12 volts and put an alternator on it. I’ll go duck under my workbench now.

I keep a 6v Optima battery fully charged as a standby and a set of quality jumper cables. You can safely jump the car from the Optima. Not cheap but effective.
