Over the years i have done a ton of Spaulding, Grant Flamethrower distributors and theres nothing cooler on a vintage hot rod. However first of all they are not a Magneto, its a distributor. Its also a dual coil ignition ( kinda simple) with two sets of contacts each controlling a single coil and four cylinders. The advantage is that with two four cylinder set ups the unit will provide spark at 10,000 rpm almost forever. No a lot of parts and just setting each contact at .018 will get ya going most of the time... There is some misunderstanding however as how to take them apart, there is a center bolt (7/16 wrench) holding the advance unit to the lower section using a conical drive!! This bolt ( depending on direction of rotation ie:ford vs chevrolet) could either be clockwise or cc clockwise, This bolt needs to be loosened up a bit and them struck with a hammer to dislodge the advance from the lower shaft etc. If this isnt done carefully the cast iron advance weights will break !!!!! I typically pick them up at a swap meet hold the lower gear and turn rotor inside the housing with my thumb, you can feel the advance unit weights against spring tension. My last few customer units had the problems as seen today on this flathead conversion. Shown in pictures. I had some of these weights water jetted out for me and used my last set today, i dont wish to sell these and use them only for customer repairs .........
still have tons of flamethrower stuff , doing one right now for a flathed ford ........very good ignition for a hot rod jimlinder@juno.com
Couldn't agree more, awesome distributors IF rebuilt properly. This was done for me by Bubbas. Worked a charm!
