1948-55 (1st series) Chevy pickup owners... I got a question!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by SamIyam, Sep 5, 2006.

  1. What width rear end works under these trucks?

Do you have a pic of yours? We'd like to stick an 8" rim with a 255/70 15 under the back... will it fit? Probably a 3.5" off set...

What did you use? How wide is it?

I know... a lot of questions...

    Thanks a bunch guys!

    Sam.

  2. You need a rear-end that measures 61or62 inches from face of drum (where rim bolts) to face of drum. This will give an 8 inch rim w/ backspace of 3 and 3/4 backspace fit w/o rubbing fender or box. This is w/ a 235-75-15 tire,...don't know about your tire size.

Camaro, nova etc. with parallel leaf will bolt in. About 58" flange to flange. I have used these and didn't even have to change the spring pads.

  5. 67 68 Impala is perfect width with chevy rally wheels]8"X15 STANDARD 3.5" OFFSET......THIS REAR END UNLIKE OTHERS ALLOWS YOUR TIRE THE CLEARANCE IT NEEDS AT THE INSIDE [BEDSIDE] AREA......
BELIEVE THEY ARE 62" OUTSIDE HUB TO HUB.
We used a 91 92 Crown Victoria rear in a 54 here at the shop - it worked well too,if a Ford pattern is desired. [pic attached]

What chooprods said. Mine has a 68 impala rear in it and works great. I have rallyes on mine too. It does however not work well sitting in the garage in pieces. Time to put it back together and drive that sucka.

68-73 Nova was what I used I'm running a 15x7 and a 205/70 tire. S-10 springs and homemade perches, hangers and shackles. Used stock S-10 lower plates.

The G-Body rear in my '54 is too narrow. I started out w/ 15x8 rims w/ 255/70R15 tires and switched to narrower 15x6 rims w/ 235/75R15 tires. Clearance is still tight and I will soon be installing 1" wheel spacers.

I hope this helps as sort of a "what not to do"

i used a 10 bolt from a late-model truck ('89) on mine, then again i used ALOT of stuff from the late model. not sure on the WMS-WMS measurement, but i widened the bed 3", narrowed the frame 3", and built 4" tubs in the bed. (i'm using a 10" wide tire)

i'll see about getting some pics up, but it may not be "traditional" enough for the hamb.

I have a 80 Camaro rear end slated for the 50 Chevy (car)and I measured it yesterday.......it was 60 inches outside drum face to outside drum face and 45 inches on the center to center on the spring pads. Prolly no help but there ya go.

I am using a 1980 Camaro rearend. They are 1" wider than the nova rears. I am using 15x7" steel wheels from a fullsize gm car. They fit perfect with a 235 rear tire. I'm sure a 255 will fit well too.

Do an Internet search on widths, Ford guys have this info available. Fords are good - easier to change gears. I have about a '58 Ford PU in mine-has a 9" pumpkin. Did put in 4-bar with coil overs so it runs 275/60 on 10" Chevy rallye rims. Rallye rims are good because you can get them easily with multiple bolt patterns on same rim. My wife's truck has a 60's Merc Comet-8" pumpkin. Used Dodge Dart springs and moved inboard for using 275/50 on 10" rims.

I used a '73 Chevelle rear under mine. I don't recall the exact measurement, but it is in the 61 or 62 range. Had to cut off the coil brackets and make new brackets.
