It was one of those non-sanctioned, gr*** roots, community centered, drag strips, located on what was the largest bomber airfeld in WW II (the Enola Gay was based there). Been there for years, and this weekend I find "new" You Tube video of them now racing on a roadway, and 1/8 mile. I found some talk of a "new" drag strip in the works. Anyone know anything about the old, current, and future Wendover Raceway? Never been there, but I'm curious what happened. I'm guessing it's FFA related. Butch/56sedandelivery.
I went past it while wandering around south of Rt80 and Frontage rd during 2009 speedweek. Gate was closed couldn't get to the track.
http://www.wendoverraceway.com/ Looks like fun! Butch, I'm sure you meant FAA...the Future Farmers of America probably don't care, either way! LOL!
We go out to Wendover every so often to escape the local culture. The airport actually has a number of flights in and out on the weekend to service the hotels. I'm not sure where exactly the run, but they had a race scheduled this past weekend. The next weekend is April 10th. Here the website: http://www.wendoverraceway.com/http://www.wendoverraceway.com/
OOPS! Yes FAA, but I think they're a bunch of farmers anyway (not to discredit real farmers) for booting so many drag strips off smaller airports. I found a GOOGLE search post that mentions racing on the newly paved "Airport Way", 1/8 mile while they wait for their new strip to happen. Just wanted to know what happened. The Wendover site E-Mail does'nt work, and the phone is a recording. As far as the 1/8 mile goes, the spectators are standing along the road behind orange snow fencing; at least at the former track they were behind stacked rows of old tires. Keep the posts coming please. Butch/56sedandelivery.
They have several casino flights in and out every week. Boeing 737 airplanes with 160 people ready to loose their retirement funds.
Are'nt there ANY NW Utah/NE Nevada Hambers up on this? Tell the story. Thanks. Butch/56sedandelivery.
errrrr, we usually just use the acccess road past the bend...it's a little rough and get very narrow in a hurry but it works!
Well, I finally got through on their E-Mail, and received a response. The FAA did pull the plug, due to "the runway returning to active status and being resurfaced". The 1/8 mile is supposed to be only temporary, but they did'nt want to elaborate on the "new" track, only that it would'nt be at the airport. Butch/56sedandelivery.
Was actually on the Strip in 2000. Way before 9-11 increase air port security. Drove down the strip in our Wrent-a-Wreck pretty sure it was one of the many Taxi Ways connecting the Run Ways that were in use back when this base was active. Some areal shots on Google Maps will show shadows of how big this base was and shadows of past runways and taxi ways..
Here is the location of the old drag strip burnout box, for those that are curious; https://goo.gl/maps/uAFwxcVSeEzkKmCx7
I don't remember the strip as any of the above do. It was east of the tower about a quarter mile and ran to the south. The timer, announcer, ticket taker and starter was one in the same. Kids emptied their trunks with tools and tires along the fence, just like the old days. I'd guess it was 1/8th, maybe longer. No cl***es, just choose someone off and go at it. The return road was immediately to the right of the strip. They usually cleared it before sending another. No hurry, not that many cars. The night we were there, some big shot from Salt Lake trailered a Dodge in. Semi-safe and fun.
I was out here at the airport today with some of the Rolling Bones cars racing on the taxiway between the runways, basically the back half of the old drag strip. A lot of fun.
