Calling all people that are vastly more knowledgeable than I….. here are some pics of a rear end I pulled out of a 1935 frame. It has a leaf spring kit, pretty cool…..but I have no idea what rear end this is. I want to sell it, but I want to represent it correctly. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Looks like an 8". Can you get a socket on the bottom nut that holds the third member to the housing? If you can, it is an 8".
it's an 8" ford. As for what it came from...you might do some measuring, and some googling, and you might be able to figure it out. Compact and mid size Ford cars used them from the early 60s to the mid 80s, IIRC. If it had a tag under one of the nuts holding on the center section, that would make ID a lot easier.
It appears to be out of a 70s Ford Maverick. Should be 56.5" WMS to WMS. 2-3/8" register will be an early one, 2-3/4" register will be after 1973
If it's a Maverick, I believe it's a direct fit for the shoebox Ford guys. Shouldn't be too hard to sell, to somebody close to you.
Please forgive me for this sidetrack. I'm probably mistaken but I thought all 8 inch Ford rears were the same width; Mustang, Maverick, or whatever.
@atch , the Ford 8", like the 9", came in several widths to fit the vehicle it came in. While the Maverick was 56.5", early Mustang (65-66) was 57.5", 74-78 Mustang II was slightly wider, and 67-70 Mustang, Cougar, etc. was 59.375". Still think the rear the OP has is Maverick based on how close the spring pad is to the backing plate, and the brake hose distribution block. The Maverick rear is a bolt in for 49-53 (54?) Fords, so highly desirable. The only downside is they were usually 2.79, 3.00, or in the case of the "Grabber" package, 3.25 ratios. Looking at the pics again from the OP, the register is the bigger one, which indicates 74 up. I currently have two maverick rears and a 68 Cougar rear, so I verified those dimensions.
It should hold up fine to your standard small block on street tires. I ran one in my Model A before I switched to a 9".
Agreed. I have a Maverick 8 inch in my '54 Ranch wagon. Only had to relocate the spring pads. Since I'm running a 302 with an AOD I had 3.50 gears installed.
The engineering changes Ford made in 1967 to the 8 inch made them a lot stronger, and they hold up well in the cars they were designed for. Ford made millions of them....
I have an 8.8 inch rear end in my avatar that came from an o/t Ford SUV. Direct bolt on for my truck.
The 8 inch rear end also came in 70s Ranchero. They're strong enough for most street driving. The 9 inch is definitely stout but the MOPAR 8 3/4 was no joke either!
8 inch use the same 28 spline axle size as 9 inch 28 spline axles. They are what many call the small bearing end size. The third member design is kind of like a scaled down 9 inch, in that it has the extra 3rd small bearing pinion support. That helps make it stronger. The 8 inch was used by Ford in most small blocks, so it's plenty strong for that.
I had my son conduct a social experiment. I had him wear a Tee shirt. He was beaten, spat upon, and cursed. Am waiting to see how he is treated when he leaves the house.
Petroleum engineer, great car builder and now this? I see a new avocation on the horizon for you, well played!
