    Hello.

I'm new to the forum and flathead vehicles. I inherited from my dad a 1950 Ford Deluxe Custom which ran well until a few weeks ago when it ran out of gas due to an inaccurate gas gauge on an evening drive through the neighborhood. Its a heavy car to push back home.. I got it started with gas in the carb but it does not idle well and it dies within an half mile of driving. It appears to be fuel related. Could it be the fuel filter or glass bulb? Any recommendations on what to replace first and a store for 1950 parts.

The below thread seems related ..

    Thanks

  2. Sounds like you pulled up some crud / rust from the tank and plugged up a line / filter / carb port .

is it the factory engine in the car ?
    Car original ?
    Restored ?
    Modified ?

you need to answer a couple questions and a pic of the engine / carb will help .

  4. Looks like a lot of crap in the bowl and filter element..... I'd start there.

Running it out of gas probably pulled some crud off the bottom of the tank into the fuel system. You need to make sure the line from the tank to the pump is clear. If crud got into the carb, it may take a rebuild to get it all out. The filter and sediment bowl look pretty bad also.

How about buying new tank ,clean out gas line and fuel filter and carb don't mess with cleaning out the tank much less expense then having cleaned. It is so easy to do having a compressor is a plus to clean out the gas line But im sure you thought that of already. Draining out the tank doesn't solve the sidment problem and puting new gas in does care of sediment Store (shoebox cental) parts

If you are going to be removing the sediment bowl from the fuel pump, make sure you have a new gasket when you reinstall it. They are subject to sucking air, which will wreak havoc with you fuel system. Although it seems counter-intuitive, I have found that cork gaskets work better that the neoprene ones.
