    Guys,
I am helping a friend work on a custom 1957 Ford Fairlane. Currently replacing the Generator. We have a new one and I have taken the pulley off of the old one and put in on the new one...question is how much to torque it? Anyone know?

They don't have to be all that tight, Probably 50 lbs if that.

    Mr48,
Thanks for the response. I sorta figured that, it has a key to ensure the pully doesn't spin and a lock washer. I torqued it to 55 lb ft, that is in line with what you're suggesting.

Sounds like you got the generator pulley figured out. Anyway, cool car. Assuming that is still a y-block in it with the three two’s?

Funny I’ve never found an alternator with a key.

Ok, Jimmy six...the Generator does have a "key"...I just torqued it to 55 ft lbs because it seemed about right.....so in '57 Generator's had a "key"

Guthries, the car has a Y-block...seems a bit tired.... I may axe some questions about that "tired-ness" soon....

How do you hold onto the pulley to get a reading? I just zap it on with an impact.

    Goldmountain,
I put a 2 bolts in 2 of the mount holes and then 2 punches on each side, jamming the pulley's vent area in two places, then torqued it. I first hit it with and impact, then worried I hadn't tightened it enough....

My reference to a key was for alternators that just tighten the fan and pulley tight up to the main shaft and don't seem to worry about it. I've never torqued one eventho there is an Allen opening in the shaft. The nut is quit large and the threads are fine and I use a 3/8" drive battery impact.

For those who like Ft/Lbs, wouldn't the metric equivalent be in Meter/Newtons?
