About a year ago I saw a black 33 or 34 coupe on here or Instagram that has white walls, white running board rubber or covers and a white roof cover. The car looked like a freakin" tuxedo, it was awesome....now that I own one....I can't find it. I want that look on mine, but I cant find any info on white rubber, or white running board covers. Any help would be awesome
That was popular back in the 60s. Check out old Hot Rod Magazines for them. A lot of them used white Naugahyde. So I guess they didn't step on the running board much....
It might be worth your while to check out white bed liner or white rock guard. But as mentioned, the other option, more traditional, is upholstery materials for a covering.
White rubber sheet is very hard to find. I searched for a long time trying to find fine ribbed white rubber sheet like what used on the Chuck Porter pick up and came up with nothing. I ended up using a pyramid shaped pattern vinyl flooring and cut my own, made some forms so I could heat and bend the edge and glued it on. https://www.c****rubber.com/matting-pyramid-vinyl-matting/
I was looking for some running board “rubber” a few years back for my Model A, and I had some success. I think my googling success was searching for runner mats as a start. Ribbed and diamond patterns are likely best sources to find some in colors. Food industry is where white is mostly found. You will very likely need to buy a minimum quan***y that is more than you need. I ended up using black ribbed for my running boards and a blue diamond pattern for floor boards in high wear areas. The blue looked a bit ‘street rod’ and I did not find a white I wanted to use. I hope this helps a bit, but you will need to do a bit of on line exploring as sources change over time.
There are a couple of companies up here in Canada that will make custom running board covers for vintage vehicles and I talked to both of them when I was looking. If I remember correctly one said he couldn't do it and the other said he thought he could but I don't remember for sure. Once he quoted me an estimated price I opted out. http://www.runningboardrubbermats.com/ http://www.runningboardrubber.com/
Tuck & Roll will get you home! Restoration Supply shows a couple of types of white rubber and white vinyl in their catalog; whether or not it's in stock now-a-days is the next question.
There is a white rubber roofing material used by the RV industry and roofers for flat roofs that I could easily see working for the insert and running boards. Special hi tac glue is used to keep it in place. Looks like tire white wall. I have worked with the stuff when I worked for an rv manufacturer. It is a smooth finish though. A friend had built my great grandfather’s 31 model a into a ISCA winning kustom in 1963. His insert and running boards were covered in white vinyl Naugahyde. He said he shot the Nauga himself out hunting.
Back in the day there was someone who sold white vulcanized 33-4 running boards.Nice. I have been on a quest for 20 years to find that NOS set in somebody's rafters. Hasn't happened yet. Man of your stature should make some! I'd be in for a few sets..
Thanks. I used a windshield urethane. Dow chemical I believe. The Restoration Supply stuff is either the pyramid vinyl at about twice the price of what a flooring store sells it for or their ribbed stuff which has 1/8" wide ribs with 1/8" between each rib which was to wide for my tastes. I just remembered C**** Rubber in NY does an easy sweep flooring which has a wide rib as well in white. Probably the same stuff Restoration supply sells and again about $12 cheaper a yd. He wouldn't sell to me because I was in Canada. https://www.c****rubber.com/matting-easy-sweepround-rib-vinyl-matting/ I was looking for this style in white but if it exists it is well hidden as I looked for months. I could get it in Black, Red, Blue, Orange just about every colour but white.
I tried that as well. Rubber/Vinyl flooring has so much mold release in it I couldn't get anything to stick to it with any longevity. I used cleaners and adhesion promoters used in the collision industry for removing mold release and nothing would work. Any abrasion after it was applied and it would just start flaking off. Part of it is the the ribs as well as they are so thin and flexible its tough to get anything to adhere to them. Not ideal for a running board situation.
check marine supply, i got some from a guy said thats where he found it. not ford mold pattern but installed it looked great this looks similar, says available in white and price is reasonable https://www.c****rubber.com/matting-easy-sweepround-rib-vinyl-matting/
How long ago? When I was looking they all told me it wasn't available anymore. I called a pile of vintage boat places as apparently Chris Craft used to use it on their boats.
In the early 60's I used whitewall paint on my stock running boards. Took several coats but seemed to last ok.
