Technical 51 Merc optional Windshield washer

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by GTfastbacker, Aug 21, 2022.

  1. Gentlemen,

since i removed the whole Dash board on our 51 Monterey looking for hidden electrical Gizmos i learned the car canes with optional windshield washer.
There is the Whiper switch with additional knob and two hose ports on the back.

Unfortunately the preowner didn’t took care so much for things like this, so there is nothing left of the system except the switch.

Anyone please have informations and pictures about, maybe a diagram?

My body parts catalog shows the whole whiper system but the washer is not shown.

    Thank you a lot
    Joe

  2. Ford and Mercury in those years used a foot operated washer pump system independent of the wiper switch. It consisted of a bottle mounted to the left inner fender, a foot operated rubber pump, and either a central nozzle mounted on the cowl, or a nozzle in each wiper pivot bezel. All connected with tubing. As far as your switch, not sure what the ****on and ports operated. Maybe a momentary wipe?

Over the years Ford had some real odd ways of operating the windshield washers. My 57 T-Bird has the pedal operated foot pump. In the 60's some T-Birds had a small pump with a rubber tire that was driven off the backside of one of the fan belts. Some Mercury's had a pump driven off the back side of one of the wiper arms. Your best bet is to find a 51 Mercury Service Manual and see what it says about the washer.

A better picture of the switch ***embly might give some clues as to how it operates.

The hoses are probably for plumbing the washer fluid and the bottle or bag is pressurized.

I believe pre about 54/53 it’s a push ****on. Maybe you have a random push ****on under the dash with some vacuum lines. Later ones are foot. If its an aftermarket Look up Trico systems for early 50’s cars. You can see kits on eBay. Sometimes the instructions can be read from the ad. It’s like three vacuum lines and a push ****on.
the ****ons come up for sale about 30 bucks. The main thing is that the top part that is actuates the vacuum needs to pull and push. It is doesn’t do anything the rubber inside dried out and you need to move onto another top. Some can be updated with later tops.
