Technical multi carbs why so popular?

    16-17 mpg on my 4 carb setup running 80-90mph on my trip to Bonneville
    I have a digital NGK Wide band O2 sensor on it, when cruising even at that speed the 4 carbs are running on the idle circuit.
    Motor turns 2500 rpms at 90mph, all 4 carbs come in together no progressive linkage

  8. All joking aside I'm a 2x4 aficionado, all 4 of my old cars have 2x4 setups, from low profile to tunnel ram, supercharged to crossram.
    Just can't beat the look of multiple carbs.

    The OEMs ditched TBI 25 years ago. Every internal combustion engine since then has one injector per cylinder.

    My uneducated opinion is that the fuel distribution is best when it matches the basic engine architecture. I-6 or 8 would then benefit from 3 or 4 small carbs and a V8 would benefit from one or two 4bbl, or 6pak.

    Multiple carbs, or more precisely, the lack of multiple carbs, is the reason lots of Hot Rods have full hoods!
     
  12. Because some people are gluttons for punishment when it comes to synchronizing carbs... synchronizing 2 let alone 6 sounds either terrible or a lot of fun.

    Synchronizing carburetors that are carefully selected for the engine on a manifold that is carefully selected for the engine is not a problem.

    The problem arises when the builder ignores the "six P's of engineering" ;) (See the second line in my signature block).

    Maybe it's not just about the physical attributes.
    Sometimes I think that words have power.
    Phrases such as...
    Two deuces
    Three deuces
    Triples
    Dual quads
    Four 2s
    Six 2s
    Just roll off the tongue so nicely and seem to actually have the ability to align the stars to our liking.
    Multiple carburetors also endow super powers.

    Well this is an opinion topic so here's mine. Ya been warned...:cool:
    But seriously, in the hands of a patient and disciplined tuner multi carbs can be a real asset to going fast. Patient to get it right, discipline to leave it the fuck alone when it is. It's almost amazing how well and clean and fast a tri-power car can be when the linkage is right. You smack the last 2 in it feels like an automatic with passing gear in a stick shift in high gear. Is it kool? Well, duh. For us it's about getting a broad curve to the available torque in the range where the car lives. All out WFO is different, and if fast like that is the target get a big 830 annular Holley and hang on. Or a Dominator, but those are not our focus. Ultimate power-kool-torque? Webbers. In the right car their looks are almost equal to the raw power they give. They mean business but their damn sexy too. For street dual quads I like the idea of a cross ram. Again, broad TQ. I imagine a nice roller SBC, a cross ram, built to buzz about 6500. Stuff it in a mid 60s roadster or proper period 64 Malibu. Ooo weee. Done right it'll tuck your sack in your cracko_O But the original question? Fk'n eh its kool. Hells yeah it'll work. What more could ya want?

    It's about who is the best badboy . Single throat injectors also it's a world of excessive fuel and watery eyes and , " stick it look what I've got ". I compare it to the engine having children and the sound is like Yyyaaahh !!! I'm gonna floor it and keep it there !!

    4gth4h.jpg DSC04426.JPG This engine makes 55+ more power than a single carb, even with a dominator, plus I think it looks good, way better than a single carb. I've proven it time and time again, that a tunnel ram (tuned properly) makes a bunch more power. and it's all dyno proven, There have been times where multi-carbs. just plain, will not work. had a customer bring in a small block chevy (?) with one of the goofy 3X strombergs on top of a 6-71 blower. no dice, wouldn't even flow enough to idle. no way to get it to run on the dyno. could probably get it to "run" around the parking lot if you're a parking lot cruiser.. but zero chance it would run for power.
    Joel (hemi Joel on here) has a early hemi with like 6 or 8 carburetors on it, it runs way down in the bottom 10's N/A and does drag week with us.. Also, Brian Kohlman, (racer x ) has run really quick in a coupe with a blown hemi with a bunch of 2 barrels on top of the blower, like 6 or 8 of them he does drag week too, but now he has a ridiculous late model hemi on NITRO !
    . I've had mixed results with cross ram intakes, or short runner (low rise) 2X4 intakes. I've been tuning mulit-carb set ups for over 45 years, so it just seems natural to me lol . Hemi Joel and Brian (racer X on here) have the patience of saints.
     
  25. I'm in the beginning stages of putting a dual 2bbl (2 94s) manifold and carb setup on my '50 Ford Flathead. I bought a new speedway manifold and have a pair of good 94s to use. I need to figure out linkage details and such, and I bought some different size jets to experiment with. Should keep me busy for a bit sorting it all out. :cool:

    The thing about carb set ups is that some people do it to be "Kool" and some do it to be "Faster". You can usually look at the rest of the car and get some idea whether someone is a poser or is serious about actually gaining performance with their carb setup.
    Its kinda like the guy that wears his baseball cap backwards and thinks it makes him look Kool.......its usually not hard to tell the posers from the real performance guys.

    Ask yourself.........do people look at your car and think you built it with some real performance in mind? Or do they look at it and think it looks "cute" ?
