Jeff is on vacation so you guys are stuck with me this week. I'll start it off with a Hemi valve cover painted by Dennis McPhail. I got it at the Rat fink party at moon back in the 90's and had Roth autograph it... mcphailvc.JPG

    Hello,

It has been my pleasure to have met Pat Ganahl at such an early stage of his journalistic career. He was just a few years younger, full of college level plus writing skills, ideas and an advanced degree. Plus, he was a hot rod guy!

It was one of those things where an enthusiastic guy wanted to express his ideas onto another young guy with photojournalist ideas. Ahh… 20 somethings, what a level of growing up? The whole world ahead of you, trying out what you feel is the right thing to do to be able to have some security and a lifestyle appropriate to being young.

Pat was one of those guys that did not hold over anyone, the idea that he was a “staffer” on any magazine. He wanted to get the best product stories and photos out to the reading public. He was not a person that made anyone feel at a lower level position, just because they were not a foo-foo “magazine” journalist.

    Jnaki

For that and many other reasons, I enjoyed my time with all of the staff guys, but it was Pat that gave me the confidence to continue on in photojournalism. Even though I could not write myself out of a paper bag in my High School English Classes, I learned and honed my skills through trial and error.

The first returned written story from good old Tex Smith (after being called into his office… like a H.S. Principal) was to go over what I thought was one of my best stories. Easy to read and straight to the researched points of the build, with a little sidelight from my wife talking to the hot rod owner’s wife for a different approach to the story.

If anyone in a High School English Class ever got a returned essay back with more red color than a black typed wording… you know that feeling. It was when Tex Smith returned my completed story, he had some ideas for a so called, “better” story. In other words, he wanted the whole magazine to have his flavor of writing.

So, there were red marks all over the page, paragraphs moved to other spots and generally speaking, it was a story written by Tex Smith. Not that it was a bad story, he just had his way of publications and the feel of the whole magazine(s).

But, as Pat took me aside, we chuckled at the “red” paper in my hands and he said not to be too worried. Everyone at one time or another got the “Tex Smith” red pen marks all over each story turned in for the next month’s magazine rough copy. HA!!!

Thanks, Pat… You will be remembered…

A pair of dual scavenger pipes running from under the motor past the rear axle. A great example of a typical hot rod/cruiser in the late 50s to early 6os from So Cal.

  6. @Moriarity , if we had any kind of issue with you handling this week’s FAS we’d have disowned you by now. And now here’s a picture of my avatar as interpreted by artist Parry Johnson . image.jpg

Here is a painting I had done by a retired designer named Steven Brown. It is of my 55 Chevy, which I have owned for 50 years. 55art.jpg

Yes, it's got toes in various pools. The model A was built & run by Paul Van Stavaren. Paul succumbed to cancer earlier in the year.
I did this take on it last weekend. Fitted it up with touches more to my liking. Wonky back window placement. I do this sort of thing every Sunday somewhere. 6H/HB pencil on A3 paper, photo montage.

I think in a Rod & Custom issue. I was thinking the same thing. I think it is a picture of the car club- The Over The Hill Gang. I could be wrong though. That gold bucket T with the black top is what caught my eye.

  25. I think the guy who owned these went by Mike:D

But seriously, I can’t draw a stick man to save my life . You guys who put pen to paper , paint to what ever medium , take photographs and simply find beauty in the “ everyday” my hats off to you folks . I love art I just can’t “do” art .

    cheers !

  26. The club pictured is the "Early Times". Well known southern California club.
The T bucket belonged to Dick Knudsen, I owned it for a while.
