    Mule Doctor

    Good morning all.

I am currently resetting my H.A.M.B. profiand status. I was a member years ago but had to take a hiatus and since then can't find any of my previous info so I've created a new profile. Anyway, I'm on limited time so I will get to the point.

Is there anywhere that the front clip attches directly to the frame? This is on a 1949 Dodge Coronet. The car is really rough. All of the body mounts that were not rusted away have been removed. For my own reasons I want to lift the body and the front clip off of the frame as one. I know there might be better ways, I've read all of the posts here and elswhere so please don't lecture on how to do it other ways. We can discuss that at a later time when I am more available for chat.

Right now I just need to know if the front clip is attched to the frame and where.

I thought it was under the radiator mount and I ground down what looked like rivets or bolt heads but when I lift it still pulls up the frame.

Like I said, this car is rough, and there is copious amounts of rust.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. There is one bolt in the center of the radiator support it has a spring deal on it . I think some on the inner fender wells to the frame

Most old cars the inner panels are attached to the frame in the front wheel well area, also in the center under the radiator core support. Some cars have supports going from the lower sides of the core support to the frame. I have never encountered any other front clip attachments to the frame on a mul***ude of cars I have worked on through the last 55 years.

It's going to be a bit more of a challenge to do it with the nose on it but that may full and well depend on what equpment you have to work with.
What you don't want to do is lift on the nose you either want to figure out how to attach what you are lifting with to the firewall and then also at the rear .

Back more years than I want to count I helped a buddy swap frames under an OT rig that been in a front end crash and bent the frame and pretty well destroyed the nose. we jacked the body and frame up, blocked the body up and let the frame down far enough to slid a couple of pretty good 4x4 beams between the body and frame and then let the frame down and a little at a time raised the body on the 4x4 beams until we could clear the tires with the beams sitting on blocks. Rolled one out, rolled the other one in and reversed the process.
When my students and I did my 51 Merc we had the nose off it and we lifted the body off the frame by hooking a chain to support braces on the firewall and lifting with the 5 ton shop chain hoist and using the bolts in the trunk (trunk lid off) to bolt another chain to that we lifted the back with the cherry picker. We had it balanced pretty well but had guys on both sides balancing it while the frame got rolled out from under it and it got set on stands.
