    “HAMB Relay”

I am trying to buy a bed for my truck that is in Quincy, Illinois and trying to get it to Austin. We are going to Bentonville, Arkansas for Labor Day and I had the great idea to run up to Quincy and get the bed and trailer it back to Rogers and then back to Austin. Once I started figuring out the logistics of renting a Uhaul trailer in Quincy and dragging it back to Austin the good deal on the truck bed was not looking like a good deal anymore. I looked into getting it picked up and shipped here without going up there myself and it was waaaay too expensive. I considered pulling a trailer from Austin to Quincy and pulling it back but that is a crazy long haul and I’d use a LOT more fuel.

It would be REALLY cool if there was a HAMBer who is coming down to Texas in the next couple weeks to pick up parts and would pick up the bed and bring it and I’d split the fuel costs…. I like to daydream a lot. Is there any kind of network or website where I could piggyback onto a haul? I figured you guys have dealt with this a lot. This bed a about 400 pounds. Thanks for any ideas or help

What you are asking about is what we call a HAMB Relay. You may want to edit your thread ***le and include the words 'HAMB Relay' and it may help your request get noticed more. "HAMB RELAY - truck bed from Quincy IL to Austin TX".

Thanks for the suggestion… it wouldn’t let me edit the ***le but I added it in the ad. Cheers

I have made a simple rack to set a pickup box on top of the box on my 48 out of 2x4 boards and hauled one quite a ways before. Not knowing what your daily road rig is that may not work. I think the box I hauled back is the one that is on it now.

I think you are able to edit the thread ***le. On your first post on the thread hit edit, then advance edit, and you should be able to not only edit the body of the post but also the thread ***le. At least that is the way it used to work.

Haven't used them in years but I use to advertise small loads like that on uship. and hope I find someone going that way not fully loaded.

Got lucky a few years ago sending an oversize construction truck to a port and found someone for half the quote we were getting because he was dead heading that way locally to bring back a combine from the same port. saved us $7,000. Everything lined up for both of us.

Just never know until you try. But like I said it has been a few years and not sure if they are still a good site or if the shippers moved to a different siteto use.

Check out T&A transport listed in the HAMB alliance. Ben is a great guy to deal with. He hauled a sidecar for me from AZ to Sid’s shop at Guthrie OK .
Use the Guys that support the HAMB .
There’s also another person listed in the alliance venders .

I used UShip for a crated engine 10-15 years ago. It took about 2 weeks to get what I thought was an affordable quote. No issues there. I got a call from the place I selected, big truck with a box on the back pulled up. No lift gate, dolly, etc. luckily I had propane in my forklift;).
So to the OP, make sure who ever you find has a way to load it, or maybe the seller does? Same thing when it arrives to you.

  11. Please post more information about the bed & possibly a picture of the bed! I have a car waiting in Kerrville, Tx going north & don't have my schedule set yet for heading down, but since I transport so many high end cars I do not take a chance on something in the trailer that might get too close to the vehicle! Hence "more info needed"

BenD @ T&A is a quality transporter & a life long car guy, if he can do it. Hamb Relay used to be a great thing until one particular got involved in it & put a black cloud over it. Uship is 90% brokers that will promise you the world, but seldom deliver. I would rather NOT transport any parts, but try to help out from time to time when I can.

    God Bless

i rented a uhaul trailer one time to move 2 big heavy garage doors,i just rented the trailer in the same city as the doors were in,it saved me from dragging it an extra 200 miles.I returned the trailer in my town, even got a discount for being early with it,i used their car trailer,i used a toyota corolla as a vehicle to determine the type of trailer:cool:.If i ever had to do it again i wouldnt think twice,it worked out perfect for me.It will save you a lot of grief if you go yourself, nobody cares for your stuff like you will. harvey

how much is the uhaul rental?

Instead of renting a trailer or towing yours up there, how about buying a trailer locally up there? yes, it might cost you more up front but you could always resell your new trailer when you get south or even keep it, doesn't hurt to have more than 1 trailer. you can get by getting a cheaper smaller trailer versus a car trailer to haul a box back minus the rental fee for the uhaul you might not be into it to bad?

That is what my dad did twice while on trips. that is how we ended up with an extra enclosed trailer and the newer equipment trailer and resold our older equipment trailer . what they wanted for rental for his good buys he figured he was ahead by buying trailers instead.

When i rented the Uhaul car trailer it was 95.00 for 3 days, but i got 20.00 off for being a day early. It was a one way rental, meaning it could be dropped at any Uhaul depot, around here they are at a couple of gas stations handy my place, really a good setup if it works out. harvey

At least it isn't in some out of the way place that takes ten hours of driving after you get off the interstate to get to. Plus the route is all interstate highways.
You might be able to get a Hamb hauler to pick it up and get it to the Dallas area if their route doesn't take them to Austin. Or find someone who can get it to the Oklahoma cityd either go after it or it shouldn't be hard to find it a ride down 35. Screenshot (384).png Screenshot (386).png

Exactly! That’s what I was hoping for. Piggyback on someone’s planned trip I would gladly run up to Dallas to grab it.
The bed is aluminum so weighs about 350 pounds give or take and is 9 feet long, 6 1/2 feet wide.

I realize it’s a big IF and timing is everything but it would be great to be able to pay someone some cash who is already on their way to Texas. That would save me a big trip
