I bought a 50 Merc where the RH water pump was a leaky, rusty mess. It had a connector for the heater hose. I found a replacement for the water pump that had a plug where the connector was on the original. I wanted to switch the plug and connector, but both were frozen in place. I haven't found a replacement for the connector and I don't want to mangle the plug until I can replace it. Any suggestions, or other successful workarounds out there? Thanks, Wayne
Your new pump has a frozen plug? I would just say try a little heat on the cast iron around the old fitting. But if you do the same on your new pump to get the plug out, it might ruin the seals.
Are you asking how to get the plug out, or a pump that has a threaded hole for the fitting? I’d also wonder if you could get one without a fitting hole, and drill and tap it out?
Difficult thing to clamp tight in a vise, I would bolt it on a block to secure it before the violence begins. Hopefully it has a hex head or big allen feature and not just a stupid square pipe plug. good luck
Are the plugs steel or br***? If they are br*** they should come out. Apply lots of Liquid Wrench and let it seep into the threads. Then use a wrench "THAT FITS" the plug and turn it out. You may find it easier to to remove the plug by removing the pump from the engine and securing it in a vise making sure you don't damage the pump. Plus, you can then use an extension pipe on your wrench handle or a breaker bar to give you greater leverage on the plug. Also, apply just a little heat to the plug with a propane torch and let it go thru several expansion and contraction cycles of hot and cold. If all else fails you could very carefully drill out the plugs being very careful NOT to cut into the original pipe threads. You may then be able to literally "pick out" the remaining thread pieces. Then use the correct NPT tap to rethread the hole. The pumps shown below are 8RT Ford pickup but the same "plug" principles apply.
Those castings are not very thick. I know this because I have drilled in for a heater outlet. I would not clamp it in a vise IMHO
I believe I have a heater hose connection in my hoard. I'll check when I go down to the shop after it cools off later today. Can you post a photo of yours? If I have one you can have it for the cost of the ride.
Totally agree better to make a plate up to hold the pump then clamp the plate in the vice while you work on the pump.
I'm very interested. What do you want for it? My zip is 59937. Thanks, Wayne And thanks to everybody who answered. I'll buy this fitting from 51504bat and use some of your suggestions to get the square-top plug out.
I don't know how to do a PM. My email is mayneweyer2310@aol.com. If you email me I'll send you my address and answer any other questions. Thanks, Wayne
