Technical What is it about the field cars?

Every car I have is one that in theory should not exist. My ‘ 55 had been wrecked at least once, maybe twice, probably pulled from a junkyard in the ‘70s, drag raced, then returned to the road in the ‘80s when I acquired it. The rest are rescued field cars. Even the panel van that belonged to a friend. If we don’t grab them now they won’t be around tomorrow! I don’t believe they cost more than a driver. You get to do it the way you want it to be without paying for things you don’t need and are going to toss or try to resell. Obviously I am all for rescuing field cars!

 

I agree. Even the ones that are two far gone are worth saving, if only for parts. Heck, my 55 was stripped of all the "good" parts and drug out into the woods to rot. I drug it home Saturday, after a 40 year stint in the woods. What was bad 40 years ago, ain't bad no more.

 

I cut my mechanical teeth on a field car. You don't have to 100 point restore it. I just did the drivetrain, wiring, taught myself to weld patching the floors, and called it good.

 

When I was a little kind in western NY, the neighbors had a 54 Chebbie just like that, except it still had the hood. All the body was gone down to the floorboards, just the dash, windshield and hood- they called it a "jitney". The son and his buddies had it out one day, and snuck out onto a neighbor's harvested corn field and were amazed how easy it was to get it sideways and pretend they were Pettys- until they realized the field had just been spread with fresh cowshit Then they brought it home and washed it off in the driveway, right under his mom's kitchen window When she got home, the shit really hit the fan

 

Field cars are all can afford. They can turn out pretty decent with a bit of effort and not to much cash, so long as having fun is the main goal .. Its a good feeling to rescue these old mongrels.

Definitely too nice to be sitting there rotting, really sad. Good choice for getting to 2nd base those Hudson seats are like a comfy old armchair

 

Almost a field car...
it was a parts car for a convertible. all the good sheet metal, bumpers, grill etc. wound up on the convertible.

Thanks. I don't know what happened to the white one, everything there was for sale.

 

I drove past this one for over a decade before I stopped in and discussed it with the previous owner. We struck a deal just before Covid and I researched and found the owner prior to him who began the mods and we've been in discussions about getting together to talk more and see what else we can do. It's my understanding that he still has the engine and transmission that he intended to put into it.

 

I'm gonna dig this one out as soon as everything dies back this fall. 55 210 2dr sedan.

 

I found this in a field half a mile from my house. I talked to the owner who said I could have it and brought it home. I've been collecting parts for it for close to 10 years. Someday..

Old cars don't grow on trees, but they do rot in the fields. Gotta know when they are ripe for pickin.

 

This '30 Sedan body was found in a field along a ditch (not primed then) and rescued, and I built this car from it.

 

I built this '30 A pickup out of numerous scrap pieces found in fields in Iowa 30+ years ago.

 

Pulled this one off the side of a hill in the Sierras 20 years ago for 900 bucks, all tradedeals and money owed I pulled together as I was broke. Turned down 3 3500 dollar offers over the next few weeks. It's had a 427 in it , a 327 and soon a 383. Lots of trades and I am still in it less than I could buy one for, even if I could save the cash to buy one in similar condition. I can fix. It easier than buying it . It's not perfect, but the only car I ever chased , and it was a 4 year adventure to get it.

 

Mmmmm... . '59 Bel-Air . Prefer them in dark black w/3-tone gray interior, but I like that color scheme too.

Am watching this with envy from Europe, where such cars have long become ferrous-oxide and where we have very strict inspection rules so that's anything will require almost a full restoration whether you like it or not. The nearest I can think of are abandoned projects but even those are no steal price-wise...

That's what I've been told.

 

Sometimes you get there really late in the natural process and end up cutting out the parts you need and then cutting the trees to get it drug out.

 

My 49 Buick was a field car when I bought it.
