The Dodger Chargers came before Chrisman’s Comet, but their blown engines on gas were no match for Jack’s Comet with it’s nitro/direct drive combination. The Chargers were a half second and 15-20 mph off the Comet’s pace plus the Comet had the nitro thunder and smoked the tires through the quarter.

I first went to the local track in 1961 as a early teen ager, .... this 32 was typical of Gas class cars back then (at many local drag strips)
That's how the avaerage gas class cars were built and looked for the most part.

    Hello,

As most folks seem to think, the first “Bounty Hunter” was named by Connie Kalitta. As shown in the above photo. In 1962 era of FED race cars, Connie Kalitta’s top gas FED was one of the fastest racers. It was in top gas class that the name “Bounty Hunter” was coined. There was a list of racers he wanted to defeat in the FED class racing. When he met the opponent on the list and won, he crossed off the name from the list.

But, back in Long Beach many years before the above photo, there was the original Bounty Hunter.

The first "The Bounty Hunter" 1960 Steve Pick from Long Beach

The 671 on top plus the Hilborn Injectors created top performance from a new look Steve Pick and Joe Koenig camp. It was the last step in improving his original FED creation.

“This is Steve Pick in the Koenig and Pick car, running a centrifugal blower and homemade injection through a Crower U-Fab manifold. The car made Hot Rod Magazine, which referred to it as the Rickshaw, because of its stance and unusual front end. However Steve could not make it competitive with the centrifugal blower, and later adopted a more conventional 6-71-Hilborn setup.”

The Original Pick/Koenig FED at Lion's Dragstrip 1959… The normal look of an FED was motor, frame, tires and headers. This had all, but for the two things that made it stand out were the hydraulic front end and the huge centrifugal supercharger.

Then as time and races were won, but not the consistent top eliminator wins, they conceded.

After many months of tuning and changing the centrifugal supercharger specs, the team finally went to the standard tried and true 671 supercharger with a two hole, Hilborn Injector System as most FED racers had at the time. In 1960, the Hilborn two hole injectors almost became the standard set up for the top racers in the USA.

  27. That is a Connecticut State Police unmarked car parked at the timing tower. The CSP did not like the drag strip at all. They were constantly busting our chops for the smallest infraction.
