Hey guys! I’ve been on here for awhile and trying to gather as much info as possible over the years. At the same time I’ve bought, sold and traded some good old ford parts. After I sold my 29’ I really started a pile for what I would consider a pretty traditional hot rod. I’m sure some would agree and some would disagree with a later model T5 tranny, but that’s an option as I do have a 3 speed. As of 2 weeks ago I do now have a pretty rough 30-31’ roadster body. Typical spots need attention. I do plan on doing the work. I have the tools and skills. What I may be lacking is the ol school knowledge and I hope the hamb will bring me up to speed. Currently staring at an old pile of crust including; New 32’ frame rails (need model A x members) 35-36 rear end and, bones and spring Halibrand 201 (repaired and in pieces) Hydraulic backing plates Wide 5 drums Wide 5 wheels (v8-60 fronts) Round back spindles Drop axle 2-8ba and a 59 block lots of internals(hope one works) Edelbrock 3duece intake Old 2 duece intake Offy heads Ford 3 speed T5 trans first question’s : If I can build the 201 qc with the 35-36 rear end. Do I need different axles? Trying to use hyd brakes and wide 5 wheels. any chance I can use the 35-36 rear spring off of the bones with the 32 frame and model a rear cross member? thanks all, have a great weekend!
I’m inspired to build my hot rod by my late grandfather and his flathead powered 32. He saved that 32 from the scrap yard after it was ran as a sprint car. Unfortunately the car was sold between generations. He raced offy’s and even attempted to qualify for the Indy 500. I have a few really cool pics of him and my father from this period. The blown 201 came from his garage. Hoping to get the rear together this summer.
Yes to everything, except the 35 spring in an A crossmember. Only A or T rear springs work in A crossmembers. You can use all the 35 axles and diff in the QC. The ring and pinion won’t work if they are ten spline though.
Update…found a hood local. Now I’m thinking does a highboy need a full sized 32 grill shell or chopped? does anyone have a diagram on the body mount placement on the frame? I’m looking to make some bracing for the body in order to begin a little body work/ replacement. I’m hoping to pick up from some of the holes in whats left of this subframe.
On my coupe I did the 3/4” mini channel in the front as the frame is pinched. The 32 frame wheelbase is longer, so the hood will need to be lengthened. I used a 2.5” shorter Brassworks radiator with 32 shell. Had to trim the sides of the grill shell at the front crossmember. I built mounts on the 32 frame to pickup the stock body mounting locations. You’ll need to cut the rear body subframe to clear the frame and build/buy modified subframe.
i am doing a '30 coupe on home built rails, if you want to use the stock length hood... move the front crossmember back 1.25"... '30 wheelbase is 2.5" shorter than a '32... move the rear axle ahead 1.25"... reverse the firewall... trimmed about 1" from the grill sides... i trimmed some of the cowl's front subfloor back about 12"... the cowl skin just cleared the rails... i used the front, curved section of '35-'36 tudor door patch panels as cowl patches... they curved up just enough for the cowl's skin to stay ontop of the rails... this kept there from being a 1" gap under the door...
I’m looking at front A cross members for the 32 frame. Speedway makes a dropped version. And the spring they sale is dropped also. On top of my 4” dropped axle… there is a certain height I’m looking for. Similar front and back to this 32. also curious to know what tire sizes this 5 window has. I dig it. I love all these cars, but I don’t really want my car to be as low as this roadster.
Went to a buddies garage and score a few goodies. I’m 95 percent sure these subframe rails are for a 30-31 roadster they look just like whats left in my body. Scored an old chopped windshield. About 4.5” short! Scored a rear A cross member. Thinking of buying a front repop. Halface threw backing plates on my front end. Looks like a 2.5” difference from bp to bp from rear to front axle. Not sure if that’s a lot. No fenders on this car though. Also dug up what I thought was a reverse eyed lower spring for the front end. But it may be a mono leaf? It’s about 1/2” thick in the middle. I haven’t officially measured the thing. Are these usable? Why? lol Other that that I struck out on wish bones. Can one take model a wishbones and extend them. That axle I have is 2 1/4” at the boss. If I don’t use model a or 33-34. Does one still run a spring over-the later wishbones.i’d love to get the front end wrapped up on this soon. also looking for reputable suppliers for a front x member and sheet metal parts
