So I pulled the rear drums from the axle and am wondering if I am missing some sort of rear axle seal.
Picture attached. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks and have a great Holiday!

  2. Inside the axle bell, there is a seal. You have to remove your axle bells to remove and install a new seal. It does require a special tool to do so. The is a simple adapter that threads onto a piece of pipe. The seal is serviced from the inside of the axle bell. Both the tool and seal are available.

Although Mac's list them as being different for Model A vs. V8 cars, some suppliers list them as the same seal.

You will need about 4 feet of 1/2 inch pipe. The same seal is in your torque tube for the driveshaft as well. I will also add, this is not easy and requires most of the axle ***embly to be removed from the car and completely torn apart. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

There are oil seals inside the axle housings (B-4245) and there are grease seals in the hubs (B-1175 or 78-1175 depending on the particular vehicle year). As mentioned, the rectangular grease baffles are missing. They do help keep grease off the brake components should the grease seals fall. We stock all of this too.

In addition to the grease housing missing, the brake cylinder is in the wrong location. There's a right and a left. The larger part of the housing faces towards the front.

Looks like your e-brake cable is missing the clip that holds the spring back from sliding into the tubing also.

  7. From the picture it appears your brake shoes may be incorrect as well. One shoe lining should be shorter than the other. I always forget which one. Some help I am.

When you reinstall the wheel cylinders correctly , also
install the correct brake hardware that secures the E-brake arm, etc.
1940 Ford looks like this. First photo is P***. side. 2nd photo is Driver side.
Are those the correct backing plate bolts?

It probably doesn't need to be said. You better inspect the front brakes also.
