I was going to grab burgers for the family for dinner , pull the handle and it simply came off in my hand !!!!

and yes I know it’s just a hood release , pop the hood , grab the hood then push the release ****on .

have always done it this way , never raised the hood by the handle .pisses me right off .

    Are these repoped?

    can this be fixed ?

im so pissed , gonna take my shirt off and sit in the corner and cry :(

I can't believe an 82 year old car part broke. I'd demand a full refund.

Man, your luck sounds like mine.

The handle can be repaired, I broke a Ranch Wagon emblem I had just had re-chromed, it made me sick, I had looked for 4 years to find a emblem that was good enough to re-chrome and it came back perfect, long story short I broke it in half.

I made a call to Steve at Advance Plating and told him what happened and if it was broken in shipment, I told him it was my fault, he told me he could repair it and a few weeks later it arrived as good as new.

Steve treated me fair and I am happy with the results. HRP

Would a 39/40 Ford handle work as a replacement? HRP

  12. Forty merc right? Any chance ford is the same? My uncle might have one hanging on the wall- rescued one day when he was operating the crane at the transfer station 25 or 30 years ago. Pm me or send a better prebreak picture, will see what we can do.

Man that ****s. I worry about that on my '39 Ford. It has a Drake repo on it because the original one was broke off when my Dad bought the car years ago. I imagine that a '40 Merc one is going to be hard to find.

  15. Nope , that’s why it’s all we have left . Them old Dodges where Hamb fist proof :D

If mine can’t be fixed , or I can’t find one for a decent price I’m hoping a ford one will work , it’s a little different looking but if it bolts up I would be happy .

Hope there's a readily available replacement.

What's the rest of it look like, might be easier to make one or have one made out of stainless and polish the bejeezus out of it. Welding pot metal and rechroming can add up quick.

    Story time, Bear with me:
Owing to the rough and tumble life I've led, I am a connoisseur of pain.
One day at the hosp waiting room a fellow was whining on about how the cuts on his forehead were getting unbearable. His wife while attentive was not showing any empathy.
When he got summoned back she stayed, so I told her how I had found that injuries to a leg arm or even a back can be turned from and ignored.
An ***ault on the face won' t let one do that.

Huge bummer. I have a Ford one listed in the cl***ifieds right now. And it comes with a hood! Don't know if it's the same as Mercury, however.

After 82 years of not breaking you kind of expect it to keep not breaking. Just like the british queen, she had been around for 96 years so people were surprised when she died, it seems people expected her to hang on like an energizer bunny just because she hadn't died long ago.

People and logic don't mix too well. ;)

The 40 Mercury Handle is all by itself, and are very hard to find. Call Bill at “All Ford Parts”. He had some that were cast in stainless steel in the 1970’s. They aren’t cheap!

Get a chunk of steel bigger than the handle and start carving.

I'm surprised no one did make a more robust replacement...I mean sounds like there are aftermarket but are they built to stand the test of time?...I know its not a Ford...

sent you another PM. Fixed this one similar break on nose piece-clean break. Drilled both ways installed small diameter stainless rods with a bit of devcon. Hard to see break and very strong now. Did similar on C1 Vette windshield stanchions. This is a very nice 40 nose piece they broke removing--fix won't show when installed. Also friend I sent you has a 39 Merc and maybe a 40--he will look
