I forgot to comment on this. That's ****ed up. I've never heard of anything like that at the Pileup (nothing that wasn't friends messing with friends anyway!). The Pileup folks seem pretty respectful, even cleaning up after themselves at the Fairgrounds. Once they leave it's a different story though.

I turned that guy... felt bad.. but if you let in one.. then you have to let everything else in.

Distance, friendship, hamb or no hamb, relatives, whatever.. it has no impact... if it fits the criteria (as interpereted by the inspector on the spot) then its in..

    Thats the way things work.

First year I came with the HellRaiser, no problem, second year, with the HellRaiser, no problem, last year with the 40 coupe, (with a heater!!) this year back to the HellRaiser OR 29 fenderless roadster on 32 rails, BUT the roadster has disks up front, ya know, I do like a little safety, but what will you do with such a car (roadsters) that show up with seat belts showing? Period correct? No, didn't have no seat belts back then, nor did they sport disk brakes, nor did they have wide radial tires. So many are now sporting B.F. Goodrich T/A radials, (Me too) We didn't have flame throwing cars back then.

In attending airplane shows, they are not gigged for having safety items that were not original to the period, I.E. shoulder harnesses instead of just a lap belt, or a modern radio in the panel. These are added safety items.

To be sure, 99% of the rides I have enjoyed googling over there each year, look like they are time warped.

Unfortunately, the Hunnert Car Pileup has become so sucessful it has even out grown the race track area. Even the crowd has become almost too large to get into the Fools' bar on Friday or Saturday night. Hunnert has become probably the best place to attend a traditional hot rod custom event of the nation. This is with much appreciation for all of you up there who have worked hard each year to put this on.

I also know that because the Pileup has become so large and sucessful, you have to now request volunteers to help with such a large outing, and here a thanks goes out to those who have volunteered to help.

To turn away someone who has a "stock" appearing car may not be true, I came from the 50's era, and so many of the cars back then, might only have a nose and deck job, with the hub caps off, But it was rodded, we entered them in the local drag races under the stock cl***, got the paint and numbers on the windows and away we went. We had fun back then. And this is what the Hunnert Pile up is all about, to have fun.

Speaking for myself, and I'm sure there are quite a few others that will agree, that it's not only the destination that is the fun, but the journey to get there.

SO...with all of this in mind, when you do have the briefing with all of the volunteers, please brief them that not all of the cars, trucks, motorcycles, race cars, and "Whatchamacallits" are 100% true vehicles of the past, but the body styles probably are correct.

See ya there again, Joe, Magnet, the rest of the VooDoo gang and all you other H.A.M.B'ers

I should be clear that my mis-adventure was not at the pileup. I had to send a picture of my car to a show promoter to be registered in a car show down south. My car was in primmer and I told them it would be. No sweat, sent me the pre-registration stuff. I drove 1400 miles and at the gate some *** informed me no primmered car were allowed. I had to park in the outside lot. I walked in to get my registration money back and saw at least 4 primmered cars inside! When I finally got my money back we went out to leave and discovered some jerk reached under my hood and ripped a hand full of wires off my motor. The missing plug wires were torn apart, the ends were still in the cap. Now maybe you can understand why I won't "park outside the gate". I don't have issues with the car people inside the show, its the non-car folks on the outside. There are way too many people with no respect for other peoples things out there.

This is just a suggestion because maybe some other guys have the same concerns as Gene. What about having a couple Pileup Staff walk the lot outside...dare I say like security guards. You could have the guys rotate after and hour or something with guys inside the gate so they don't miss any of the show. I don't know...just a thought.

Last year it seemed that cars that were turned away were mixed in with regular parked cars...what about a designated parking area outside the gate for the stock or overflow cars. This designated parking area would also make it easy for a staffer to patrol.

Maybe you guys already thought of that, but I figured I'd throw it out there.

YEah, we plan on having a designated area for the cars that don't get in. We have said all along that we respect everyone who builds and drives their own cars, even if they don't fit in. Hell, I have a pretty much stock 50 Chevy and 65 Econo, Django has a 67 Chevelle, Magnet has a stock 62 Chevy, etc. We wouldn't let some of our own cars in! :) Obviously we like cars other than just what we let in, and have friends with billet rides. They deserve respect, too, and we've been negligent in making them park with the minivans. We've corrected that this year. As for patrols... I've never heard of any problems inside or outside of the gates at the Pileup. Some of the best people attend our show! Anyway, we have people at the gate looking out over the lot all day long and people ***isting with parking out there.

Hellraiser... disk brakes, seat belts and radials were not "period correct" but we understand safety. You'll notice there are no mention of them in our criteria. We will turn away FENDERLESS cars with IFS, but not fenderless cars with disk brakes. It's a tough call, but in the end, they don't really detract from the look and feel of the car, and safety is important. A nosed, decked and lowered car is not stock, and doesn't look it. Very mild, but still a custom. The no stockers rules is meant to keep the show all rod and custom.

The show has gotten big. Sorry. Think of it as more cars to see and people to meet! :D The only way to make it smaller is to a) stop doing the show, or b) make it MORE elitist with even tighter restrictions... say, no radials, no disk brakes, no alternators, no part newer than 1965, etc. That's just silly... and a huge pain in the ***.

The Pileup has ALWAYS been dependent on volunteers. We couldn't do it without their help. We have always had a tremendous amount of help from the Voodoo Kings, and other clubs like the Blacktop Barons, Suedes, Emperors, Road Rockets, etc... and from people who just love the show and want to help out... even non-car people, but lots of HAMBers like MrG***er and Eyeball, and HRLC who has always been a MAJOR supporter by voluntarily handing out flyers at the gazillion shows she goes to. Some of you may have noticed that there was a HUGE improvement in how smooth everything ran last year compared to the past. That was ALL thanks to Dumb*****. God bless dumb *****s. Anyway, volunteers keep the DIY feel of the Pileup and make it feel like a big party rather than a formal car show. Volunteers will be getting a special thanks this year.

BTW, the new official beer of the Hunnert Car Pileup (and of the Chrome Czars, the Blacktop Barons, the Hot Rod Hucksters and Hot Rod Ch***is and Cycle... :D) is Warbird Brewing Co. The owner Dave is a cool guy, he's an independent just trying to get started, and the T6 on the cans is his airplane. Based out of Ft Wayne, IN.

No free PBRs??? That might cut attendance in half! Will Warbird be there with beer?? Moreover... will Warbird be there with free beer?

For legal reason, I'm not sure we can say, but the only thing that will change will be the color of the ice cold cans... ;)

PBR supplied the Pileup with free beer for 4 years, and this year won't even return emails. Not sure what's up, but we've loved having them in the past. Oh well... we got Warbird Beer this year! Warbird is MUCH better than PBR. Stop by and try some. Everyone around here who's tried it loves it. Yes, we'll have free cans, but you will have to present an ID and there will be limits, like last year. You can't beat a WWII war plane inspired microbrewery that wants to support hot rodding.

Dude, thats the coolest beer I've ever seen! Dave should add some more planes. That way you can eventually say, "Man I'm drunk. I just drank a B-52." I'd don't really drink beer, but I'd buy it just for the rad artwork.

I RSVP'd to my buddies wedding and did not realize it was the same weekend of the Hunnert, soooo I quickly sent an e-mail saying I was going to be out of town and was not going to be able to make it to the love fest. WHAT WAS I THINKING I wouldn't miss this weekend for anything. See ya in October!

That sounds fine... but pictures speak 1,000,000 words. LIke I said above, if you have ANY doubts about your cars, please ask us. We hate turning cars away, but we have to stick to the rules and will turn away cars without hesitation.

Wow! there are some opinions on this thread. I will be there. Making the trip from Texas, via Minnesota. I have a traditional shoebox custom and am in no way worried about being turned away at the gate. I want to come SEE the show, not BE the show... Is not the best part the drive. Or the surroundings? The whole reason I want to be at this show is TRADITIONAL. I love it when all the cars are on the same page. It is like being in a time capsule. There is nothing worse than watching a movie that is supposed to be in say the year 1955 and seeing a 57 or later year even 70's car in the back ground. I totally understand you guys for turning away cars at the gate. If it was my show I would do the same. I commend you for it which is the reason I will be attending. Whether my car is inside or outside the gate, I will be there to enjoy your show. Thank you for having it! Crash.

So will it be in or out? JK

  27. Crash51,

I like your style...I've been reading this tread for awhile and was thinking the same thing!
I look forward to talking with folks like yourself.
Ask around for me and I'll buy you a cold one.
See the rest of you inside the gates with or without a entry vehicle.

Crash... I saw your car at the Roundup. It has a green flaked dash... or something green and flaked... right? No, you won't have any problems

    Crash,
Your car will be just fine, just make sure the Plowboy special Oldsmobile
Valve Cover Covers are installed properly.

Is your motor back together yet?

I'm looking for a room mate. Seems FLT-BLK has broken up with me...

Things the potential roommate must have...

    Must have a room
Must not snore or get too pissy if I do.
Must like long candlelit conversations in which I talk about nothing and they shut the hell up and listen.
Must like long walks on the beach, guacamole, wool socks, puppies and New Kids on the Block. Willing to bend on the New Kids thing.
A giant bank roll and total dislike for hairy man *** that can barely defend itself are a plus also.

If you just read that and thought, "Hey! That's me!" Seek professional attention and then let me know so I don't have to sleep in the car...
