    Lisa Kelly Mural

    Hello,

Lisa Kelly is a well known artist in So Cal. Her works have been in all mediums and locations. This mural happens to have a style reminiscent of the early Graffiti Art style of the late 70s early 80s we used to see in our road trips. (And much earlier when street art was considered vandalism...)

Most of her artwork is located in the Santa Barbara coastline cities, but a few are in Hawaii and elsewhere in the western USA.

I really appreciate fine line drawings with up close detail. So I thought I would share a few shots from a favorite book of mine in my little library. This book is a real joy to look at. The book was from Sweden in 79, the quality of the printing and the weight of the paper is amazing. If you all see one of these books at a swap meet on a table, this is good value for your money indeed.
    Enjoy from Dennis.

    Sesame Street by Jules Muck

    Hello,

Santa Monica is a great place to work and possibly live along the coastline. Afterall, it is the end of the Route 66 cross country road trip. (Or the start from the ocean.) But, as coastal properties go, the closer you are to the ocean, the higher the cost of the property. There are areas that are quiet and have some nice community properties, but they, too might be in the high dollar range.

Our mom was born there a long time ago, our dad used to take us on a long surf/pier fishing trips up the coast, we surfed the South side on a couple of rare swell days as teens and one of my wife’s favorite walks is at night out to the end of the pier. We did that a lot as we were “courting” each other in the college days. From surf movies at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium to rock concerts in the same venue, Santa Monica was a draw for us. Besides, it was on the way up North via Highway 1 along the coast and freeway close for weekend jaunts.

Her grandparents even lived a few blocks from the ocean in a nice old 40s house. (back then, the grandfather taught at the nearby UCLA campus) In the times when we could go out to have a nice dinner at a restaurant, we had several favorite places along the 4th Street mecca. Over the years, they have changed and more fabulous places have joined in the fray. We will wait again until it is safe before going up there again.

    Jnaki

The whole area was a magnet for us and they had different places all over the city limits, like most larger cities. We have seen quite a bit of the city proper through our visits and drive through times of other vacation road trips. The larger cities are going out of their way to get “cultural” in their dealings with the community. So, more street art murals are appearing on blank walls all over the USA.

    "Sunny Day
    Sweepin' the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet

Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame Street

    Come and play
    Everything's A-OK
    Friendly neighbors there
    That's where we meet

Can you tell me how to get
How to get to Sesame Street

    It's a magic carpet ride
    Every door will open wide

I have this great book of phantom views / cutaway drawings of 100 great cars.
The quality of the printing and the drawings are superb.
Again, this was a purchase at a swap meet years ago, I think I paid $10.00 for this book, money well spent indeed.
    Enjoy from Dennis.

"DODG’EM GO WHERE YOU LIKE…IF YOU CAN" By Leon Keer

    Hello,

One of our favorite rides at the local Long Beach Pike Amu*****t Park were the bumper cars. Our whole family tried to go in two cars, with my dad and me in one and my brother and our mom in another. The kids were doing the driving and going forward. I was too little to have my own car, so I had to go with another person, usually our dad. But, after our mom decided she had enough bumper action, my brother got to drive the cars by himself.

Over the years, as I grew taller, then finally, I was able to drive those bumper cars. Now, no one was safe, including my brother who always tried to get away from me. I was determined to hit his car as many times as I could, I suppose that inside my mind, it was real payback for the tricks and power plays he used to force on me. So, any time I had him in my sights, it was a full throttle bang.

The original Pike was bicycle riding distance from our house, but walking down the L.A. River banks was a fun outdoor activity for a couple of kids on a nice summer day activity. Then as driving days came into play, the Pike was an attraction for cruising around enjoying all that shoreline Long Beach had to offer. The beach in the day, the Pike at night and the gawdy attractions was just a part of teenage life.

When the Pike closed in 1968 and the whole area looked like a aerial bombing attack occurred, it was time to say goodbye to those cars. There were a couple of old shops that had some cars in their showrooms, but riding them was not in the picture.

    Jnaki

The remodeled area of that downtown portion of the beach became The New Pike shopping area. But any recollection of the old amu*****t park was long gone, replaced by restaurants, stores and the large aquarium. It was the location that retained the name: The Pike, but it was in honor for what used to be there. Much to the amazement of the older folks, asking any teenager these days about any of the rock groups of the 60s comes up with a “What? Who?” And that is the same set of answers to the question of what was the PIKE? What?

“Long Beach Pike was an amu*****t park in early 1900 and after some decades of fun, the Pike was officially closed and demolished in 1979 having lots of history disappear. Leon Keer has stated that, “I wanted to revive some of that history by painting a 3D mural of a garage with an old bumper car from the early days. Dodg’em was the famous bumper car ride in the Pike. I was overwhelmed by all the memories from many spectators.”

Just so you know, this is exactly the way it was printed in the book, so its not upside down.
You have to remember, this book is from Sweden, and this particular illustration is of a European automobile, front end suspension.
I believe in being accurate when posting such material, so I went back and checked the book for myself, and here is the information that will help explain, what you are looking at.

    Thanks from Dennis.

    Hey @verde742 and @jnaki

    So the plot thickens.

jnaki sent me some very cool, proper and correct information, about the line drawing that was obviously an error by the printer.

To my eye, in the printed line drawing in the book, its clearly visible, that the fill plug for the oil, on the knee action shock absorber, is on the bottom, and to me, that isn't correct!

This is the information from the Hillman Minx shop manual, and you can clearly see how the suspension was designed and how it works.

    hillman minx evenkeel suspension.jpg

One of the things that I really appreciate about all of the members of the H.A.M.B. , is the element of people that are sharp enough, to know when an image or printed material, isn't correct!

So hats off to @verde742 and to @jnaki for the sharp eyes and the dogged determination, to help set things right !

    Thanks from Dennis.

Upside down, can be correct but only when its a boat, used for a sign!

Or maybe, when its an inverted, Ranger 6 cylinder engine!

I grew up in West Allis Wisconsin within walking distance to State Fair Park and the amu*****t park part was open all summer long in the evenings. My older Sister worked there as a summer job working the rides/games/food concessions and regularly she would take myself 3-4 buddies around to talk with all the boys, then we all rode the rides for free, huge fun. The electric Bumper cars or Dodge em cars as you called them were my favorite, At 8/9/10 I had many hours of experience, fun driving/crashing, also I got my first kiss with a neighborhood girl in the Small World boat ride, went through darken tunnels. Your post brought up a very good memory of time spent with my Sister, we stayed pretty close all through time, sadly she p***ed too early at age 54. Thank You ! for all your participation here on my Art thread, you are the number one poster and appreciated by many for your time/efforts I'm sure.

    Hey W,

Thank you for the kind words. I contribute as I can (on all threads and posts), from what I know and do some research. As long as I can remember some old stories and they fit the topics, it is a fun project. Drawing individual art takes a while and I start on new ones almost when I see a project in the making with some identifying information.

They may sit awhile in my files until I get a spark again. But, when I run across the art as I cruise through the files, I may get a spark or two to finish the artwork. I have taken a ton of photos, but artwork is drawing, painting, coloring and trying to keep inside of the circles, as we have been taught by our old elementary school teachers.

Thanks for creating this thread. It is different from the Friday Art, as Saturday is to identify the artist that created the artwork and give him/her credit. Friday is to do the artwork yourself. There some outstanding artists that are not here on the HAMB art threads, so this thread gives credit to those that have the skills to be so creative. We should all be so lucky.

    Jnaki

As long as I can remember where we went and some inclination of other artwork, and my fingers stay alive, I can continue to post to both art threads. Again, thanks for the kind words.

It can be found at 596 N. Mt. Vernon Ave in San Bernardino.

    Hello,

Amapola Rico Taco in San Bernardino has a long standing reputation and has grown over the years to 5 locations in over 40 years of the Inland Empire Area. Each location has its roots back to the original.

We have all been to a ton of swap-meets over the years, and I am sure like so many of us gear heads, we cant resist certain items, when we see them on a table.

For me its always been the various tail light lenses and the various makes and models of them, some are for marker lights and some are specialty lenses.

I dug out the Pyrex bowl I have, sitting on a shelf, that has a variety of lenses from past swap-meets, and I thought I would get them all out and clean them all up.

They really are little works of art, from a time period gone by. Its amazing to see all of the striations and magnifying elements, that were in the original molds, that made these cool works, of automotive related art!

The brands represented here are YANKEE, LUX, DORAY, SPARTAN, S&S, ARROW, GUIDE, NATIONAL, CAT'S EYE, BACK LIGHT LENS CO.

A lot of them have no markings or MFG number or name on them, but they still look great to me.

The photograph, with the vintage " TRAFFICATOR ARROW " , is made by
" SPEAR HEAD SIGNAL of SAN PEDRO CALIFORNIA ".

I am going to get a new opaque amber lens made for it via 3-D printing, and then I will give it to

@Hitchhiker, so that it can go on one of the current truck projects, he has going on right now.

    Enjoy from Dennis.
