So, I moved to Austin....actually Taylor,Tx. I thought finding a job wouldn't be too hard.I thought I'd ask you guys if anyone knew of anything in the area. All I can find is low wage stuff or you have to have a degree. I worked as a union grip in the motion picture industry for 9 yrs. and was a testing and maintanence technician for the last 3 1/2 yrs. I have quite a few tattoos (knuckles, hands, neck, etc.) I am a quick learner and a hard worker. If any of you know of anything plese let me know. THANKS!!! p.s.- If you're gonna give me crap, make it funny!!!!
Welcome! Don't get discouraged. I'm in Hutto. PM me with some contact info and I'll see if I can connect you with someone I know that has done some acting. He should know if there are any film jobs in the area. I do know that there is a decent number of movies made in this area, just not sure who's supporting them.
I know some guys who do film/commercial production in Austin... send me yer 9-yr grip rezoom and I'll forward it on.
Thanks guys!! I'll get all my grip info together this evening and let you know. Also, I am interested in anything that pays over $9 bucks an hour. I'm gonna buy an old house and I want a good job that I can stay at, pay the bills and support a few toys!!! I'll do whatever!!!.....except for man-whoring!!!
A buddy of mine got laid off (here in so cal) his wife said try a temp agency, well reluctantly he did, they found him a gig which started as a part time deal and has now turned full time and he actaully likes it!? might be worth a shot to get something rollin? and you never know what it might turn into?? just a thought....... or there's always Col Ingus's suggestion ! good luck!
I'm a Propmaker local 44 in Hollywood, I know some people in the Rodriguez camp in Austin. Acctually my wife does hair in the biz and knows some Rodriguez peeps also. Let me feel it out. I had thought about moving to Austin, since L.A. has become a nightmare, you can't even buy a under a million anymore.
Thanks again all for your info. Dreadman, yeah, let me know what you find. I'll check it out on this end and let you know as well. I love it out here, the people are super friendly and polite.I gotta get out more to see more!!!
I got laid off from my 1st engineering gig last week. It was in alternative fuels. I'm thinking about checking out Austin. Is the area known for any industries beside petroleum? Thanks, Kurt
You all had better get to Austin before the rest of California!!!! The prices are steadily rising and the job market is tough, no matter what you do. -Jason
Jason, I'm waiting for them to all move here so I can move back jk I can never move back to CA...wife wont let me
THE EXODUS IS AWN! ha...just joked about this not one day ago. austin seems to be the spot. headless: you need to get on down to austin. its expensive as shit but i think the industry you're in offers more opportunity here than taylor might.
If you are living in Taylor check out the Thunderbolts Thirsty Thursday, west end of Lake Drive, 3rd house from the end on the left, can't miss us, usually lots of cars in the streets, usually a few hot rods, people in the driveway and in the garage, just come in introduce yourself tell us you are from the HAMB and that Eddie told you to drop by. We are usually there every Thursday by 7PM, leave around 10-11. Bring your own beer.
Most of your jobs concerning alternative fuels or petroleum would be closer to the Houston and Texas City area although you might want to check with Southwest Reaserch in San Antonio, which is one of the largest private/goverment research institutes in the world. Really cool place, but pay scale is also determined on your level of education. Industry is definately starting to make its presence felt here so a lot of major indusrty is moving here.
I Just Moved To North Tx From Nor-cal Where I Was Makin $54 An Hour In The Glaziers Union,,,in Tx I Cant Even Fing A Gig For 20 So Do Your Homework Before Movin This Way
That description was given by a regular participant, Mr. Reggie Hill. I think it has something to do with not running out of Bud Light.
Go into construction, if you can't do better than $9 an hour then you just aren't looking in the right places. Nobody will give a shit if you have tats, hell the last job I was on this one dude had so many piercings in his face that he probably didn't go out during electrical storms. If you are willing to work, they are willing to pay, I have seen too many fuckers wanting something for nothing. One caveat, you may have to travel to get the real big bucks.
