I recently found this A not far away stashed in a storage building. The owner reluctantly sold it to me and I am in the planning stage now trying to decide the details of the resurrection. It has a 54 Ford y block engine 39 trans 48 banjo rearend dropped and drilled front axle with haipins. I am definitely going traditional with 16" bias tires 40 steel wheels 4 " chop and keeping the fenders. Oh, the 58 chev tailights have to go. I'm stuck on steering as I can't find a 1948-52 F1 box and column and I really don't want to use vega box and cross steer. The goal is to build it safe and be eligible for nostalgia events like the Colorado Hill Climb. I will post progress as it happens.
check jeeps, they used ROSS steering boxes... some were set up to use the pitman arm upside down [pointing up] so it goes well with steering the left wheel...
Reach out to Matt and Mike at Irontrap Finds on FB, Insta they will most likely have the steering column you need.
Sweet. I’m not hating too hard on the tail lights actually. All the right pieces there for a kick ass hot rod. Congrats
Good news! After some networking with my car club buddies I found a F1 steering box and column. For me one of the joys of a new project is scaring up parts.
I would check out Randy Gross on fordbarn. Definitely one of the good guys. He converts truck boxes to use on Model A's and might have a core. melmodela@aol.com or call at (714) 292-8660 or (323)728-5712. Charlie Stephens
I recently bought this 3x2 setup for my y block powered model a coupe. I am looking for 3 aged or patina air cleaners for it. Any help appreciated.
Update on my Model A. After a accident in early September that laid me up for months I'm back on the project. This is going to be a traditional revival so I sourced early drum brake parts and replaced the disc brake in the front. I restored 1940 16" wheels and bought Firestone bias ply 750x16 rears with 550x16 fronts. I found original 46 hubcaps and ribbed trim rings and after polishing the parts the rolling stock looks good. The tire stagger helps with the vintage rack too. Next I started building a Speedway lakes style header kit. Everything went smoothly until I realized I welded up the rear feeder tube without cutting the hole in the collector tube DOH! I fixed it. The annual Counts of the Cobblestone car show was fast approaching so I turned to cosmetics by cleaning the paint and interior...more details later. I made it on time to display the car with the Rapid Shifters car club display.
Progress report on my model A coupe. My 272 y block is sorted out with an Offy 3x2 intake but only using the 2 end holley 94 carbs. Linkage is direct, non progressive and works great. I fabbed the headers from a Speedway kit and coated them with KBS high heat paint. I had the front dropped axle replaced cause is one of those crap Hoffman group flimsy pieces. I also pulled the front disc brakes and replaced them with traditional drum brakes. The car went to Kell Kustom for a 4" wedge chop that turned out really great. There is no filler in the panels, in fact the bare metal is still exposed. I got the car back on a Wednesday and took it to the Vintage Sturgis Dirt Drags on Friday and Saturday. The engine ran great, but the 39 tranny jumps out of first gear under power. The dirt drags were super fun. Everyone had a great time with entries from 6 different states. There are a ton of pictures on Facebook page Vintage Sturgis Dirt Drags. Now it's time to pull the trans and find out whats wrong.
Gotta love a y block. Ford so it keeps the brand purists happy. And still look awesome with the added benefit of other options on valve covers etc to Chevy guys like me lol. I really want to screw together a y block model a myself
