OT, the internet is a fad, I bought a laptop

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Tman, Sep 8, 2006.

  1. Yup, joined the current century. I am sitting in a coffee shop typing this over wireless on my new to me Ibook. Look out, I am on a roll, next stop Ipod world. I still say the intenet is a fad. The abacus is the next supercomputer.

Seriously, I see all sorts of hotrod apps here. I want to mess with that Data aquisition Metalshapes has been using. And the next car will have tunes via Ipod.

I got my wireless laptop last September and it was all over then. I got an MP3 player back in April. I used the excuse of those long flights back and forth to Cali and now I here that the FAA might ban use of them permanently... dammit.

Oh, and I still have and USE my CB. It' will end up being used in the coupe for those long trips, that's for sure. It's alway good to know about the cops 100 miles before you get there ;-)

Okay if ya want to go teckie.I have a weather station hooked to mine with programing from computech which will read and keep track of the weather as well as predict your next et with data aquired from the weather station and info added from your runs.As well with this program you can take different readings from runs and calculate HP and many other things.Which by the way has been with in 1 to 2 percent of the actual dyno numbers on my engines. Also you can as well take a bad run say you made it 60 feet or more and calculate a estimated 1/8 or 1/4 run.
It also has a remote pager with it that calculates my predicted et and pages me every couple minutes while in the staging lanes and displays it and weather data on the pager.

I also have some software I picked up at the PRI show that I use to caculate bends in tubing and angles while making rollbars cages and etc.I use my laptop quite of bit for the race car.

I have some other useful software on it but I am at work workin hard as usual and would have to have it in front of me to list the others.

Not sure if this is some of the kinda of stuff your talkin bout but If someone has a good time slip I can input that and tell approx rear wheel HP if they would like to know.

I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 9200) and I love it. It has been my only PC for almost 2 years now. Of course, it has a 17" widescreen, probably weighs 15+lbs, and can't run for more than a few hours on the battery . I know, sounds silly. But I'm less of a road warrior and more of a "want one computer will all my **** on it" type of guy. I'm a software developer and HAMB addict, so I use it constantly.

I just slapped 2GB of RAM in it yesterday. Woo!

  15. Hmmmm, you think an internet provider would have some security on their wireless at the main office..........gotta love free hookups. (I am in the parking lot picking Carla up from work)

Shoe, thats what I am taking about. Cool info. I would like to see that tubing software.

heres a site with a few tools on it you can find a tube mitre program near the bottom of the page. you need to enter the size of the tubing you are connecting together and the thickness of the tube you are using, then the degree of the join.

once you have the shape on screen, print it off, cut it out and wrap around the tube to give you the shape you need to cut out.

    http://www.ihpva.org./tools/index.html

kind of hard to explain it but follow this other thread, it has the pics to explain the process..

would you mind sharing what programs you have:
i.e. the Bending One for the roll cages.

Anybody know of a good Dyno program (DynoSym?) or the one that is supposed to be gaurnteed within 5% of actual numbers.

how about a home use "Diagnostic program" - to work on these new Computerized Junks - Not just a code scanner but one that tells you what the engine is doing?

You can use your laptop to program your Megasquirt Fuel Injection

And SCTA regs state that you still need a CB radio if you run at Bonneville.....that's how they communicate with you....hahaha(I just learned that)

Welcome back Tman. Been thinking about getting a laptop for a while, but really can't justify one. I don't travel enough to need it for when I am not here in the garage with this PC.. Take it easy Geoff aka whodaky

  23. Hey! Are those Dockers?

  24. Wireless iBook?
Handy things are are Skype for free international calls, the old car manual project on the net for checking torque settings out in the garage - of course there's always changing your ignition timing on your Megajolt using your powerbook at the drags...

I do wanna play with that Megasquirt stuff, its interesting.

  28. Now I am into StageII! Lil bro gave me his old Ipod today, I even dig the music he left for me. The lightbulb went on, killer tunes in the shop, then the hotrod will get a deck that is compatible with the Ipod. I might get use to this hi-tech stuff.

8flat, good meeting you last wekend
