Technical Zip's Riser water pump info needed...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by daddy_o's_diner, Jan 9, 2018.

  1. I picked up an early cast iron Zip's water pump riser and have a a few questions. I did a search but didn't find what I was looking for.

First, does anyone have the part number for the Chevy 6 water pump it is supposed to take? Is there more than one pump availalable? I'd like to run the cleanest looking one with out fittings for a heater, etc... I'm looking for part numbers or application please. I need to get one ordered ASAP.

Second, are these designed to work with the standard SBC short water pump pulleys? If not, then what pulleys do I need?

    Thanks in advance.

Recommended pulleys are 3995642 (6-1/4") for the pump and 3850838 (7-1/4") for the crank. These are dual pulleys.

Regular old short pump single groove pulleys will fit too; but if I remember right the cast in alternator mounting uses the outer groove.

You can drill and tap the housing to use a Delco 10070107 bleeder as a alternative to the provided bleeder screw.

This is what I use, a water pump for a 69 Nova ... 6 cylinder with no air conditioning.

Auto Zone sells a aluminum pump for the Nova application. The part number is BWP-386HDA .

As far as the pulleys they are as close as your local GM dealer.

    Lower pulley Chevrolet # 3850838
    Pump pulley # 3995642

    Hope this helps. HRP

Nice one! I see they also have a short water pump for the SBF, shortening the engine length by 2".

Speedway also sells the short water pump pulleys in chrome for real cheap. In Canada, it was cheaper to get them from Speedway Motors than my local GM dealer.

Here is a link to the Zips instructions for installation including part numbers for pulleys etc:

So the standard SBC V-8 short water pump pulleys work with the Zip riser and 6 cylinder water pump?
    I have a stock 6 3/4" harmonic balancer.

They should if you use the pump with the 3-7/8 mount surface to hub face pump.
That instruction sheet is one of the better detailed ones I have seen.

I've done 2 Zips risers and used SBC short pump pulleys with no problems

What is the diameter of "regular old short pump single groove pulleys"? The sets I'm finding for single groove pulleys are not close to the recommended sizes from Zips, which are 2 grooves. I would like single.

I have been using the Zip's Risers on all my 32's and I have yet to find a single groove pulley that is the correct size, maybe a aftermarket aluminum one may be available, one thing is for sure.

Using a zips riser correctly and you will not have a overheating problem. HRP

Thank you. Aftermarket 7" aluminum is the closest I have found so far for the crank. There are aluminum 6.25" pump pulleys.
Are you using double groove on all your 32's?

Yes, a couple have had air and needed the double pulleys, several that I have built in the past didn't but I still used the OE pulleys, I figure Zip's did the R & D why not take advantage of their design work. HRP

I run two groove steel pulleys because the single upper is larger in diameter. The two groove is smaller which allows the water pump to be over driven ( speeds it up at idle ) . Also so it doubles the belt to pulley contact area, Bill
