"... yet utterly gut-wrenching to watch."

I can believe that. Had not heard anything about this documentary, thank you for the update.

  5. Jessi was from here in The Black Hills. She lit up a room when she entered. Family and friends are still hurting from the loss. Many of us from the area knew her.

  7. I knew her well enough to call her a friend. She came to Ink n Iron every year, which is where I met her. I was told to show her around like a VIP. Took her back stage, all over the Queen Mary, made sure she saw whatever she wanted. She called me Bert, for some reason, lol. Probably because I was introduced as "Robert". She was a Rebel, a thrill seeker. Really lived a great life....RIP Girl.

Sorry , and people are going to hate me, but one must survive the attempt. The whole deal was a "deathtrap" with zero survivability it anything went wrong. might as well zip-ty a floor creeper to a ICBM and light it off

As an SCTA inspector and official for over 25 years I have to agree with you on that point. When there is no sanctioning body other than the timing it’s hard to imagine what some feel safe in driving. I don’t believe she would have driven it without her feeling ok no matter how we now feel about it.
It was a terrible loss to everyone who knew her and those like me who personally did not.

And full credit to the filmmakers, they do not candy-coat the glaring dangers of running that jet car. You see from their footage in the movie that it had steering issues, parachute issues, and yes brake issues. Lots of red flags, no doubt...

I agree with Bruce on this. I got a chance to look the "car" over. Remember, it was an airplane!
Race car crashes can be survivable, airplane crashes, not so much.
I believe no racing sanctioning body would have certified it.
    Very sad deal.

It's my understanding a good part of the doc covers the safety negligence. I don't think the producers ran from that at all.

I also think it's easy to jump on a high horse here and start blaming people, but to be honest... I've done a lot of dangerous shit in my life and will probably do more knowing full well I am being negligent with my own health. That's part of the fun in a weird way... But totally get it that there are people that don't understand that. It's not intelligent in any way.

I didn't know Jessi all that well, but I worked with her quite a bit on different projects through the years - the last one being a SEMA thing we did together. She seemed pretty detail oriented to me. She seemed serious. Without knowing anything else about the situation or the parties involved, I would assume she knew what she was getting into.

Risk taking is what it is... and some people really enjoy that.

I followed her work since that 4x4 show years ago. I believe she did brighten any room with her looks and personality. When she spoke, it was clear, more than a pretty face. She actually knew what she was talking about.

I have to agree with Ryan, have done some really stupid (in retrospect) stuff in the past. How about driving 150 MPH at night on a two lane road in rural WI? We know the consequences of the act but rationalize "it won't be me"! Most fortunately it wasn't my turn! I might add that that was just one example of many.....

  17. No doubt, it wouldn't pass inspection to run at Bonneville. When you take a plane, that if it gets into trouble, you EJECT, and put wheels on it and remove the wings, there's no protection or impact zone.
It's too bad she couldn't have made a run in an actual Racecar. She did light up a room, for sure. She was very focused when she made up her mind. AND....funny as hell!!! Would get you bent over laughing. It will be emotional watching this. Get the tissues ready...

  18. A clarification for many. Thrust powered vehicles have NO rules, NO sanctioning body and NO oversight. The days of Arfons and Breedlove have long since passed. The SCTA does not recognize them and the Salt is far too short anymore to run them. This is why the NAE Team was in the Alvord desert testing

We are traditional hot rodders. We spend thousands of dollars to make old really slow cars go only kind of slow... We have no common sense man. :)

  21. I did not know that. Always wondered why they don't run those anymore. Different time......

The reason is insurance. I brought this up during a SCTA interview a few years back and there were details of coverage I didn't understand or really try to, but basically... yeah, it costs too much to insure an event that hosts them. Risk. I'm guessing there is no sanctioning body that wants to take that on.

A few years back, I was planning a drag race and wanted a jet car on hand for shits and giggles. Interestingly, it didn't effect the event insurance at all. However, the car and driver were exempt from the event policy all together... From a liabilty standpoint, the coverage then goes to the track owner/insurance. The track I was dealing with didn't have the coverage, but was willing to go for it anyhow. I don't remember why we didn't end up doing it.

I remember talking to @Bob K about it back then. He said it was more about the spectators than the car and driver. I guess there is far more potential for a 1955 Le Mans situation with jets... for obvious reasons.

  23. When i was younger, they used to have Jet cars run at OCIR, just as an attraction, along with wheel standers. They would line up and hit the afterburners and light the wooden wall on fire, behind the starting line. Which is where the spectators walked to get from the tower side to the pit side. I'm sure i'm not the only one who remembers this. It was called the Fox Hunt, cause women got in free. Last one, there was a total riot! Tower was lit on fire, girls got attacked in the bathrooms.....it was nutz!

I saw the trailer earlier today and don't know if I will watch it. There's another similar movie called In The Blink Of An Eye that makes me feel the same, don't know guys. Both of these people were Special in their own ways and Gave It All, that's Plenty to remember.

Every person, Man or Woman has there own personal tolerance for risk and pain.

I love the fact that there are still places on this earth where a person can go as fast as they want to, rules be damned. As long as no one else is put into harms way except that individual, I have no problem with this. Jessi Combs had more balls than most men that I know. Godspeed and Rest in Peace.

I looked up information on that Bloodhound LSR car from the UK that Andy Green has driven, and it mentioned having to meet FIA rules - is that just for timing, or does it include construction, safety, etc.

For the folks talking about safety and negligence. I use Mike Edwards death as a life example. Mike was a former member of the band ELO in the 1970's. In 2010 he was driving down the road in England minding his own business. He was probably humming a tune when far above the road he was driving, on a farmer was pushing round bales to the edge of his field. The farmer pushed a little too hard and an estimated 1300 lb round bale when over the edge and started down the hill above where Mike was driving. Well you guessed it, Mike never knew what hit him. It killed him instantly. Thirty seconds, maybe less, and he would have survived. I believe when its your time, it's your time. It doesn't really matter what your doing.

  28. FIA only regulates timing. A two way average with a set turn around time. FIA is French, and just one group that claims reign over LSR records. You and I could start our own Sanctioning body and have as much legitimacy.

I'll see the movie out of respect to her. It doesn't matter if the car was junk, it doesn't matter if it was not safe. She was one of us. She was one of us. How many times have we said,...hold my beer and watch this. I'm 67 years old and I know what she was talking about. Just a shame a wonderful human being left us so soon. No one wants to die. We want to Live to the fullest, if you don't, that ain't livin. Lippy

True, but for some reason they are recognized as the only sanctioning body that has any authority and acceptance world wide. I worked directly with them in 89 and 90 when we (Gale Banks Engineering) did the GMC Syclone project for General Motors, the brass at G.M. would only accept F.I.A. timing certification, even though we had the SCTA official timer Gary Cagle and some other SCTA officials on site. Gary did all of the set up and timing but the F.I.A. guy had to be there to certify all of the world records that we set for them.
