Good morning guys .. a couple issues I wanted to ask about . I have a bone stock 55 country sedan wagon 272 3 spd overdrive
1st question ..how much oil are you to put in the ****** and overdrive unit,I filled to the fill hole on each and had very heavy leakage between ****** and bell housig while sitting in garage.
2nd issue.. The transmission and overdrive work ,for the most part, butwhendropped into overdrive it has a gear or bearing wirling sound ,only when actually in overdrive.no noise at all when not activated
I have also noticed that once in a while when I shift into reverse and release the clutch I would get a rrrrrr sound and no ****** engagement and i have to try another gear, then reverse again The other day this happened only it took a bit more fiddling to get it to move in reverse.
I ***ume these issues are in the overdrive unit because otherwise the ****** seems fine
This winter I'll pull the ****** and have a look . Just wondering what your thought are on these issues .. I've never had an overdrive apart Thanks Fred

  2. Well, the leaking could be several things. Missing/damaged gasket on the input bearing retainer, cracked case, or leaking at the hole for the cluster gear shaft in the case. Sometimes guys don't apply sealer when driving the shaft in.

The whirring and lack of engagement is probably the overrunning clutch in the OD unit. There's a handful of rollers in these that when power is applied they 'roll' on ramps to lock the unit. Remove power and they roll off, allowing freewheeling. These do wear, and if they wear to below a minimum acceptable diameter, you'll have issues like this. Check with somebody who specializes in parts for the BW OD, they can supply more detail. I haven't messed with one of these for years... but broke my share back in the day...

Have no fear, did my first OD repair when I was 13,
didn’t have a clue but found an old guy that did
dis***embly was simple, the sun gears were toast on mine
re***embly was also simple, the one thing I remember was using rubber bands to hold the sun gears together, the old guy said the oil will dissolve them without issue.
    work great afterwords.
