  2. Al Thayer ran a '53 Stude coupe at Bonneville. Got his red hat setting a record just barely over 200, not even 201.

Yeah, close but no cigar. They don't let you round off the numbers.

    Hello,

Bill Coburn had a series of Competition Coupes from many years prior to 1959. Some looked cool, some odd looking and they all gave his company, Coburn Glaze Wax a great advertising for his products. Most people that saw his early versions were always calling it Coburn Glaze, not knowing it was Bill Coburn that owned the company and built his line of coupes. Check out the HAMB search information on Coburn Glaze…

This is the early version of the Coburn Glaze Competition Coupe, we first saw at Lion’s Dragstrip.

I had taken a film of one of the early versions of the Competition Coupe at Lion’s Dragstrip. Boy, was it ever impressive and loud.

So, the true Competition Coupe Class racecars of Albertson Oldsmobile + Coburn Glaze coupes got a new listing.

They were now called: Gas Modified Coupes/Sedans. But, most everyone liked the moniker: “Competition Coupes.” Needless to say, all coupes at the drags were coupes in competition, drawing a lot of confusion. So, the separate class names separating Competition Coupes from the Altered Coupes.
For those that weren't around back then, the old web photos are still confusing as to which class the race car(s) were in competition.

This was one of the most exciting races of the day.

They might have been my favorite class cars, along with gassers, super stock and A/FX. The notion you could hang a “body” on a rail and call it a coupe (or roadster) is just as absurd as their looks.

I've been looking at most all of these and wondering -- how much of a coupe or sedan body did you need to use to meet class regulations?

I always loved them, especially the dual-engine ones. But sometimes is just seems to be a front-engined dragster that's no longer competitive in that category (as great-looking as they are).
