Hello, I have a 56 Buick with a 322 nailhead that I want to overtake now. If I want more power, my question is what my Dynaflow transmission can tolerate in terms of power. Can someone help me with that? Sorry, my English is not perfect Greetings, Joe
They dynaflow was a slushbox trans, even worse than a cast iron glide. It will take probably 3-400 before ****ping out, biggest issue is trying to keep it cool, the torque converter will build up more heat the higher HP you go. Find some way to cool it down and it may hold up, the SP400 in the 60s is a better upgrade or just do the 700r4 swap for better drivability and parts availability.
How much horse power are you planning to make out of the nail head ? while not a great transmission , and generally prone to leaks . The Dyna flow is a fairly strong transmission behind a stock or slightly better nailhead . I agree a trans swap is a better option , but on a 50’s Buick that means removing the torque tube and some fabrication . I ***ume your in Europe . Look into Jaguar series 3 rear suspension setups a pretty easy way to get a mor conventional rear end in your car easily and then figure out transmission options . I got a Bundstens ( not sure if I spelled it correctly ) adapter when I had my 55 Buick as I was going to swap out the ****** then changed my mind . a really nice set up , not cheap but a great option .
I want 50-100 HP more. I think I cool my transmission first and taketime to find parts for the swap. Do I always have to change the rear axle if i swap the transmission or are there any other conversion parts?
Some guys like them, a lot don't. I used to daily drive a 58 Super with a strong 364, and I hated the way it felt. You could feel the slopppiness whenever you stepped on it. RPM didn't seem to match forward speed, with a lot lost in the transmission. As a DD, that car stayed in the carport, cause I didn't have anymore garage space. I sold the car cause I didn't have a way or place to swap out everything behind the 364. Sweet car, ****ty transmission. YMMV.
Jörg, my friend Martin converted two 53s and a 56 Buick to open drive, using a TH350 on the 56 and a Th700 on the 53s. He used GM B-body rearends on the 53s and a 64 Electra rear on the 56 and built a 60s GM truck style trailing arm rear suspension for them . All three cars drive beautifully and even the 56 that is running a little 264 nailhead through a TH350 is kind of zippy and runs amazingly well for such a small engine. The 53s are running a 322 and a 401. Buick ST400 or SP 400 out of a 64-66 (7?) Buick would be a direct bolt on to your stock 322. I think a transmission swap would free more feelable power than hopping up your 322 and keeping the Dynaflow.
Build the engine! Drive for awhile. I think you will be surprised in a good way. Then replace if you are not happy. Ben
hello baumi. I see you don't live far from me. Can I contact you if I want to swap the gearbox for more detailed information Form YouTube fremd Matrin?
The later transmissions are NOT a direct bolt on; the '53-'56 engines have a different pattern on the back of the block than the '57-'66 engines.
