Progress on the RPU -- updated pix

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Detonator, Sep 9, 2006.

  1. Got the grille shell/radiator/hood mounted and aligned (amateur hour). Mounted the bed and installed the purple heart. Lacquered the windshield posts and frame, plus a lot of little details.

WOW!!! It hits all of my tender spots. The stance, the colors, the execution, the details....it's all there for us to study and enjoy. Thanks. Are all the black pieces done in lacquer? Any speed secrets to get that soft luster on the black components?

    Your truck is really bitchin'!!

  13. Hitting the nail on the head:D

Truly one of the nicest RPU's I've seen.

  14. The spreader bar, headlights, taillights, windshield, steering column, dash and other parts are all lacquered. I strip them to bare metal, then shoot 'em with rattle-can metal-etch primer. Next I fill and sand out any divots, then shoot 'em with several light coats of Rustoleum Oxide Red primer -- again out of a rattle can. I sand that with 600, then shoot the black lacquer: Rustoleum "Specialty Black Lacquer -- High Luster Coating" It comes in a green spray can. This also get lots of light coats. I tack-rag it between each. I let it dry overnight, then color sand it with 1200 (800 first, if it's really rough). I hand-rub it with 3M Perfect-it II compound, the finish it with 3M hand glaze. For less than 15 bucks worth of materials you get a pretty killer finish.

It's a great build & also good to know you were able to paint it for such a cost savings! Good Luck as you continue!

I have followed this rpu being built in your threads and it looks to very well done. Very nice stance, and fit and finish.

I think the purple heart is a very nice touch, are you a wood worker, cuz most people are not familiar with exotic woods like that.

But the real question is when do we get to see it in person?

  29. Hey, thanks for the nice words, it's really encouraging. This rpu seems to be taking forever to put together. I really admire you guys that build these super-bitchen cars in what seems like a matter of months.

I'm not a woodworker, but we have a couple of really good hardwood vendors in the area. One of them turnd me onto it. It's actually fairly inexpensive, the shop I got it from uses it in the bed of their own work truck. It's bullet-proof and supposedly will hold its color when sealed with a lacquer finish.
