Well, I just aquired a shoebox that has been mullet rocked to death. (**** carpet doorpanels, 70s drag stickers) Its got a 351w/C4. Someone even welded trailer marker lights to the rear quarters for night time dollying to and from the track. Awesome.

Anyways, I have a 9" in it now of unknown gearing, and its WAY too wide for the car. I wanna lower it and replace the rear quarters, but with the lip removed its still rubbing on the outside of the quarter, and the offset on the rims is steep.

I have heard Mavericks rears fit in nicely, anything else I should keep an eye out for? I did a search but didnt come up with anything much. This thing is at a 45 degree angle with the Southside Machine bars sticking out down below...kind of an eyesore hehe.

    Thanx all.

Dont forget about the 68-72 torino rears. I think 72 was the last year for leafsprings then they went to coils.
The Torinos, Maveriks, Mustangs all have the rear you want. The different years have subtle changes in widths.

    67 Fairlane- 63 ½” (coil springs)
    ’72 Ford Van 3/4 ton- 68 inches
    ’73-‘86 Ford Vans- 65 ¼”

    http://www.moparts.com/Tech/Archive/rearsusp/1.html
    65-66 Mustang 57.25 inches
    67-70 Mustang 59.25 inches
    71-73 Mustang 61.25 inches
    77-81 Versailles 58.50 inches
    74 Maverick 8" 56.50 inches
    75 Mustang II 8" 57.00 inches
67-73 Mustang, Torino, Ranchero, US Fairlane 9" 59.25 inches to 61.25 inches
57-59 Ranchero and station wagon rears, 57.25 inches
    66-77 Bronco 9", 58 inches
    77-81 Granada/Versailles, 58 inches
67-71 Comet, Cougar, Mustang, US Fairlane, 59.25 inches
    71-73 Mustang, 61.25 inches
    64 US Falcon 58 inches
    67 Cougar 60 inches
67 US Fairlane 63.50 inches (coil springs)
72 US Ford Van 3/4 ton, 68 inches,
73-86 US Ford Van 3/4 ton 65.25 inches
57-59 Ranchero and station wagon 57.25 iches (narrowest 9" housing)
66-77 Bronco 58 inches but has 5-on-5 1/2 inch diameter bolt circle
67-73 Torinos, Rancheros, US Fairlanes 59.25 inches or 61.25 inches
67-71 Comets, Cougars, US Fairlanes 59.25 inches

I used a 5 lug Maverick under mine. Perfect width. Paid 50 bucks for it with brand new brakes and hardware.

    Good luck, -Abone.

I have in my hand right now an article from CUSTOM RODDER mag, Sept. 1997 that shows how to install a Maverick rear in 49-51 Fords. It's very, very close to a direct bolt in with lots of photos. Send me you mailing address and i'll mail you a zeroxed copy for only $100. ( No, on second thought, it will be free to a fellow HAMBER) Lemme know.

Cool thx so much, will do. I just measured mine and its 60"...so I think Im going to try and hunt down 2 backspaced rims and make it work. Its a 3.55 9" so I dunno. Would like bolt in tho.

Mavericks seem to be the favorite choice at www.shoeboxford.com. Some years are more desirable than others (V8's, five lugs, etc.). Granadas and others also get good ratings. It's a free site with members that have put just about every conceivable rear axle into a Shoebox Ford. Couldn't hurt to ask them.

It's not too expensive to narrow a housing, especially if all your brackets are good now. You can reuse the housing ends and brakes on it now and pick up a set of axles new for well under $200. You've got a 9", make it fit like it should!

I was gonna mention Granada/Monarch - can't recall if they're coil or leaf - I wanna say leaf & near bolt-in, but I might be remembering something else.. ;(

Ya, Shiny is right, ratstu also has an S-10 in his shoebox. If you use the 4X4 rear end they are about 4" wider (60" I think?) and 3:73 posi. All depends on how wide a rim you wanna run.
