I don't care,if your talking to me,I'll know what you mean,an if reading some one note, same is true.
I find a lot of odd wording used, but get the meaning anyway.
Often,in reading,it's good to not jump off the page and just keep going for a hole feel of it.
Bad spelling an stuff, for the most part, only up-sets those who fail to understand any way !

    Cut it out, you guys.
You're giving me an identity crisis about the little poem I made up for my signature.

Drinking from a tin cup (my dad brought some home as he was a Baliff for a few years) should be a crisis in its own;)

Edit: Sorry, ones he brought home were SS.

I don't consider it souped up unless it has at least a 3/4 cam.

    While we're here -

    souped up ?
    OR
    hopped up?

Well, (yes I’ve read the reference) but what do you think a 3/4 cam is?;)

That's the mystery, right. No one knows. :D It's just an old BS term. 3/4 of the way to a full race, which also doesn't mean anything without specs

In the 20's it was "gowed up" or "gow job". I wonder who came up with that?

You can run 2 furlongs in your suped up gow rod on the main drag. Just like quarter horses did...;)

And it'll run faster without the spare on the back.

Well , I thought so as well but @squirrel posted a write up on I think a 265. It mentioned a “3/4” cam. I don’t recall if specs were given. I’m sure the article was from late 50’s, real early 60’s.

You do realize you have just given one of the most likely reasons why it is called "drag racing"......???

To think that there was a time when I didn't have such invaluable guidance and encouragement in my life.

My dad once told me that "suped" was a slang contraction of "supercharged". It feels a likely enough etymology — you get a feeling for these things. It might have grown the "up" part subsequently, possibly when people who didn't really understand what supercharging was picked up on the expression, due to its non-technical evocation of "vehement storming" rather than its technical denotation of "additional input". The change from "supe" to "soup" might have happened simultaneously, simply because the latter was a familiar word.

So the hypothesis would be a fairly rapid evolution from "suped" (= supercharged) to "suped up" (= like, super-what? charged, is it? That kind of stuff) to "souped up" (= judiciously breathed-upon.) The way to test the hypothesis is to see if any early attestation of "suped" on its own can be found. I'm expecting early-mid '30s? Whether any usage made it to print — it would have been informal and mostly spoken — or any personal written correspondence survives, are two other questions. Has anyone done that research?

Other expressions? "Vintage" in any context outside viticulture means "1919-1930", and only that. I shall not be moved.

I just turned 78yo and always heard it pronounced SOUPED UP!!! It's like adding extra parts to a stock engine as you would add extra ingredients to home made vegetable soup.VAROOM,VAROOM.............
