I plan to locate the battery for my latest project in the trunk. Looking for ideas, suggestions, pictures of what others have done/used. Summit has a cheap one and a fairly expensive one available, but its a ways off and I'd like to see what works best before deciding.

  2. My only suggestion is that you heavily powdercoat all metal parts except for threaded items to keep the corrosion critter at bay. I'm talking at least three thick coats, best applied by starting with a 'standard' coat, then after that's fully cured pre-heating the part to 200 degrees to apply each additional coat. Cure these coats as normally. At 200 degrees, the powder will partially melt/stick on contact and if you go too heavy you can get runs. Use stainless hardware for all threaded parts with plenty of anti-seize on the threads. This will stop corrosion dead in its tracks. The coating will stain however, black will be the best choice.

There are a number of good polypropylene boxes available. They’re tough and you don’t have to worry about corrosion. I used one to relocate the battery in my ‘32 Tudor to behind the back seat.

Use welding size cable for both positive & ground leads.

Here is how I mounted the battery in the Comet, the bottom of the box is cut out, then the box mounts to a plate that is attached to the trunk floor. Cables exit the back of the box through grommets, the small lead is for the battery tender. A perimeter bracket holds the battery in place. The neoprene hose is a vent that exits behind the rear bumper, the lid and sides of the box are lined with rubber sheeting.

A sealed AGM battery can cure that corrosion problem. I replaced the AGM in my '97 XK8 about 6 months ago, using another sealed AGM that does not require a vent hose. The battery compartment and cables in the trunk look like new, absolutely no corrosion anywhere

Here's mine. All aluminum with the cables coming into the rear top edge of the box using rubber grommets .The top is held in place with two wing nuts with the top holding holding the box in place so when the top is removed the box can be lifted off to access and change the battery with the bottom tray staying in place.

I'm not as cl***y as the others, I guess. Battery is mounted on a tray bolted to floor with the cables going through the floor and along the frame. Back and bottom of box is cut out to cover and the top just slides for inspection.

If you want pretty, there's plenty of them above. If you just want functionality and something that won't corrode and is made for the purpose, go to the boat section of any sporting goods or walmart store and find a boat battery holder. Most have straps for hold down and two enlarged ports for battery cable entrance. I've used many of 'em.

Technically my battery should be enclosed (Marine Box) and vented externally as it's a wet cell. The bolts are SS with metal tray and hold down powder coated. I run a gel cell under the front seat of my other 35 Chebby hence no venting issues. I've seen cooler / tool boxes used as covers in trunks and PU beds

Moroso makes a simple black polypropylene box. I have one in my Coupe. The tie down bar and battery are tight inside it, but it works once you get everything situated.

Thank You! The idea came to me one sleepless night, the next day I mentioned it to my friends when having lunch. One of the guys said he had the ideal box in his ba*****t on a shelf unused for years.... the rest is history.
