Doug Peterson took this shot of the Hermann brothers racing the Durfee Motors roadster run by
Cirino and Groves, San Gabriel, '58 or '59, before the Hermann car got blue paint. Both cars ran blown Olds engines, the Durfee ran a port injector setup on top of the blower, both on gas.

Well I just got the Magneto back from cerillo magnetos. I'd like to say it was a fast turnaround within a week and the price wasn't bad thanks Tom. Now what kind of wire should I use for this thing solid core or spiral wound ? 20220519_111751.jpg 16529854950072820535323150754961.jpg

In the old days it was solid core wire only, like Packard 440. I'm not sure how the spiral type compares. You should probably dig up the old wire to keep it all old.

Yes it had Packard 440 wire in it but they're junk so I guess I need to find a new roll of that stuff

That Packard 440 wire is pretty pricey I imagine I probably need about 30 ft to do it and it's about 250 bucks. Can I use just regular spiral core wire for this application with the mag? Or do I have to have solid core

  9. Most likely you could. I would check with the mag guys at Cerillo maybe to see what they say.

Yikes! $250, $175…. Boy, I hadn’t looked at it lately, I’d be looking for a substitute too! Call Cerillo and see if he has a recommendation.

Me personally would buy the good stuff first up. Buy the cheap alternative and you end up replacing it with better stuff or more often with cheap. False economy especially if at the track and it starts misfiring and you've towed all that way for nothing.

Had to make some room in the shop so I had to move the car around put it in the corner for a while but at least I got to see it on the ground with the headers built looks pretty good 20220606_133908.jpg 20220606_134206.jpg

Haha funny you should ask. So Friday I got the car out of the corner and put up on jack stands and pulled the motor and trans back out to see what was binding as my clutch wouldn't disengage. I found that the input shaft was a little too long and was bottoming out on the pilot bushing so I clearanced that and all is good and put the motor trans back in Friday. Saturday took the day off and went to the drag strip in Bakersfield. Today I took the day off working on customers cars and got a whole bunch of stuff knocked out on the car. I got the mag dropped in and plug wires made. Got the valve covers cleaned up,painted and put the breathers on and installed those. Got oil in the motor and installed an oil pressure gauge and line. Messed with the shifter a bit and got it working pretty smooth. I pulled the master cylinder off and with help from the hamb was able to ID what it was and luckily I got it apart so I can rebuild it. I've got to make a battery cradle and run battery cables as I've got a starter on the car now so I don't have to push start it. And I've got to shim the starter a little bit out as it's dragging on the ring gear just a tad. Also got a new cable operated gas pedal installed as the old one was hydraulic and seized up. There's still stuff to do but the list is getting smaller 20221021_155627.jpg 20221024_131644.jpg 20221024_152956.jpg 20221021_162319.jpg 20221024_150608.jpg 20221021_162314.jpg 20221024_131700.jpg 20221024_153032.jpg 20221024_153018.jpg 20221024_153005.jpg

I got the master cylinder and wheel cylinders replaced, made new brake lines and bled the system and it all works nicely. Made a battery frame and hold down in the rear for starting and ran the battery cables. Got the headers painted and installed. Wanted to see if the mag switch was working so I cranked it over and it's working properly just backwards haha. So since I had Spark I got a little antsy and put some gas to it and it fired off and ran for about 5 Seconds. Messed around with timing for a minute and got it to run longer and the oil pressure is good. I've got a video of my friend took but it's kind of crappy and on the last time I tried to run it and didn't run too long. Let me tell you it's loud as hell!

Now I got to decide if I want to plumb the injection and try and make that work or just toss on the stock manifold with the 4 jet it that I've got rebuilt

might not be a bad idea to put the carburetor on it, just until you get all the chassis bugs worked out

Definitely a good idea if I were to be driving it but I really can't fit in the car and operate the clutch as my knee is in my neck. There is a guy interested in buying it that restores race cars and he's coming next week so I really just wanted to make it run but we'll see what happens

Yes they are rigid to the axle as the axle is solid mounted to the frame.

Brian, you've really got the ball rolling so I hope the next owner puts it back in vintage action...sounds like a slam dunk...Hopefully the journey forward will continue here at the Hamb...don't forget to let any potential buyer know about the fan club...:D

To bad you can't fit in the configuration as I'm sure it would be a thrill like no other...

Today all the a n. fittings came in that I needed to finish the plumbing for the injection. It's a little bit of an octopus and messy but it's what I had to make it work at the time. Figured if I could get it running and set the timing and run for a minute to make sure the engine's okay then I will redo the fuel lines and tank mount. With help from a neighbor a couple Doors Down we were able to prime the pump and it fired up and we got it to run for a couple minutes until it ran out of gas LOL. Ended up getting the timing set at 30° and even put it in gear and got the wheels to spin. It sounds fucking nuts. Wish I had a video but I don't sorry. The guy that's interested in buying it is coming tomorrow so we'll see what happens. I believe I need to check the plugs as I think I need to set them at a smaller Gap than usual for the Magneto 20221101_170523.jpg 20221101_170512.jpg 20221101_162122.jpg 20221101_162110.jpg
