    Hello,

One of our friends owned a black 1934 full fender coupe with a big Oldsmobile motor and LaSalle transmission. He ran it in A/Gas and B/Gas classes at Lion’s Dragstrip. It was well known as being a fast street hot rod and competitive at Lion's Dragstrip. My first ride in the black 34 Ford Coupe was very cool and exciting.
upload_2022-9-27_3-44-30.png The first photo is an internet photo capture, the others are from Lion's Dragstrip.

In comparison, this Silver Blue 1934 Ford Coupe with small fenders we saw in the same pits. Despite the fact that it was a full street version of the 34 Ford coupe, it would not have been able to run a street legal Gas Coupe/Sedan Class. The no full fenders or running boards would have put this, probably everyday street coupe, into the Altered Coupe class. Racing against 25% set back Altered Coupes and Sedans would not have been fun. But the rules are rules.

Note: The rear orange wooden structures are a part of the Lion’s Dragstrip pits scales and inspection area for the dragstrip. Perhaps, he was waiting to see if anyone was entering the Altered Coupe class, so he could enter and have a fun day blasting his modified street version of a hot rod down the dragstrip.

    Hello,

So Cal has their share of car shows from the very early days of high school parking lots, football fields and the neighborhood shopping centers, during the 50s and 60s. Anywhere there was space, a car club or a gathering of hot rods and customs made up a car show. We saw plenty of old cars in our area of So Cal. Then the larger parks and auditoriums took over for a while as the major place to show cars and attract a ton of people.

Finally, the big sports arenas came on the scene. (Now, we are talking multi-level show places.) The main floor was huge and the circular outside walkway surrounding the main floor held more cars. Even a second story walkway had some cars at the larger shows. It was a great place to spend a long while, walking around drooling at the creativity.

So, where are some odd ball places that had car shows? Old places with names like the Cow Palace, the Great Western Exhibit Center, and the historic, Long Beach Municipal Auditorium come to mind.

But, the most unusual car show was one/two that were offered to the public in a huge shipping container business in Carson, CA. It is near the site of the old Lion’s Dragstrip to the South, as well as being near and West of Bixby Knolls. It was located at the Price Transfer Automobilia Complex and Shipping Container location in a City of Carson industrial tract.

It was coordinated with the opening of the original and 2nd edition of the Lion’s Dragstrip Museum. Hot rod cars and drag race vehicles go hand in hand. The amount and quality of those hot rods attending the events were pretty amazing. They came from all over So Cal to see the displays at the museum opening days.

What fun thread. It's nice to see so many great examples without searching the web.

I took these photos of the 15oz coupe several years ago when then owner Peter Vincent was stopping by my late neighbor Pat Ganahl's house with it. This stopover with the 15oz coupe is what inspired me to get a '34 drag-coupe style project going. Pat took the photo of my '34 for one of his last blog entries.
