Hot Rods Finding some one to haul a motor

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldschoolantiqueauto, Oct 28, 2022.

  1. I found a 261 Chevy 6 in Wallace Idaho, outside of Corder Lane. I would like to find some one to haul it to Grants Pass Oregon. Any one going my way?

Change your title to "Need someone to haul an engine from Idaho to Oregon". Then you will have a million eyes see it and maybe two of them will deliver it for you.

Weekend trip, cost of gas would be a lot cheaper than freight

  6. 1,300 miles @ 16 miles to gal. @ $5.40 a gal. Not cheaper for my old Yukon, first I would new tires. LOL

Cheaper than someone that only gets 10-12 mpg.

Rent one of those smaller cars that get 30 mpg and put it in the trunk lined with cardboard boxes. My son and I rented a fuel efficient car a few years ago to go get an ot vehicle in New Mexico! We had it just a little over two days and then we returned it with 2000 more miles on it! Fast road trip, but fun!

That is an excellent idea! It's around 1000 miles round trip from southern Oregon to Coeur d'Alene and back. Road trip!

Also, ask if anyone can get it even part way for you. Wallace to Spokane, then someone else from Spokane to Bigg's Junction, and so on.

    P.S. it's Coeur d'Alene

My 2018 150 crew cab 5.0 gets 22-24 mpg on the road at 70 and sensible driving to Florida from Ca. A 2.7 V6 na 150 does better and they are the ones u rent.

Might try geting a quote from "Freightquote". They give you about 10 quotes from various companies. I had a pallet I wanted to ship from Ky to rural Montana (isn't everything rural in Montana). It had a crate on it and weighed a couple hundred lbs. Got a $1,000 quote from a company, then a friend with a business got me $500 with his discount. Tried freightquote and it cost me about $250. I did have to put it on the pallet and strap it down and drop it off at a local terminal.

  16. I got quotes, don't remember if it was Freightcenter or not but the cheapest one was $490. Now that I'm thinking, I have a friend with a dealers license, he gets rentels at a discount. I'm going to ask him if he can help me get a rental? I've never rented a car/truck before but it may be my best way to go? A couple days out of the house will do me good. I haven't been up that way for over 20 years. It may be worth the trip at any cost?

  17. LOL, no that would be a bit to much, LOL. Besides even a stovebolt with clutch prssure plate & bellhousing would need a cherry picker to unload & reload x 2 or 3 times, LOL

$490 isn't expensive, this is 2022.....is that to a frieght terminal or your door?

  20. TBH, the total fuel price would be ~$400. The average gas price between you and your engine is currently ~$4.70/gal. Of course, add in lodging and food since it's 1350 miles round trip. Weigh those costs vs the freight cost. Renting a small truck isn't going to save you any money vs the one you own; the fuel would only be ~$100 less assuming it gets 22 mpg.

Why did you purchase a straight 6 Chevy that was so far away, though?

You're retired and never rented a vehicle before? You need to get out more.

$490 sounds like a pretty good deal to me honestly.

Do a search here on the HAMB before trusting your items to one of those low bid shipping places like Uship. Lots of threads started by guys, usually saying something like “I can’t get my parts delivered “.

    And some don't have forklifts.

  27. I got it shipped & it's on it's way. Readyway will be picking it up next week & bring it to my local terminal. I'll pick it up there, saving a couple bucks from having them deliver it to my door. I got it shipped for $307,89. Way cheaper than I expected, not bad if everything go's as planed?
Why did I purchase a straight 6 Chevy that was so far away, first you must know what a 261 Chevy 6 is to a Oldschool Chevy guy. It's the best stovebolt motor to have. They are getting very hard to find these days & very covenanted by the stovebolt world. This one has the flywheel/bellhousing, both needed to put the big clutch behind it to handle it. $500 + $300 to ship is cheap... If I found one in Calif. it would had cost me twice that price + shipping...

  28. Thank you alot, I got the motor shipped by Ready Way through Freightquote & The price is very good. I hope I can trust Ready Way to get it to my local terminal. But for $307 they will pick it up next week & drop it off at my local terminal. I choose to pick it up at my terminal to save a few bucks.

I hope it all works out well for you. The pick up part added to the cost, I'm sure.....but I had good luck with them. I'd pay the guy with PayPal. Then if HE doesn't pack it decently and something happens, they will make sure you don't get screwed. I had a guy ship a top heavy item to me. He made the junkiest POS crate to hold it. On the 1800 mile journey, the $2k item turned on its side and beat itself. When it showed up, it was delivered to a friend of mines business. I wasn't there at time of delivery. They picked up the pallet with the broken crate on it.......backed up about 10 feet and sat it down in a paved parking lot. They called but the delivery truck was gone before I got there. I took pictures and immediately sent them to the guy who shipped it. He wasn't interested. Said we must have damaged it unloading it with the forklift.....the 10' trip rather than during the 1800 mile trip. Got a quote and the parts to repair the unit were going to cost about $100. I told him if he would pay for the parts, I'd install them myself for no charge. Again he wasn't interested. Got to be more about his a**hole attitude than the actual cost. So I turned it over to Paypal for resolution. Cutting to the chase, they refunded the whole $2K. I told them I would ship it back to him but he would have to pay the freight. They said not to worry about shipping it back, and they would deal with the shipper. Again, I sent the guy an email and told him I would send it back. No Reply...........

Got my $2K back and got to keep the hose crimping machine. Don't know what ever happened between Paypal and the shipper.

  30. It sounds like that dog bit his own tail not trying to work with you, LOL.
I did ask if they accepted PayPal but no luck. I hate giving my card numbers over the internet, Paypal works real good, A few months back I tried to purchase a spy camera from a company over the internet that did except PayPal & I never got the camera & got no response from an email I sent them. I contacted PayPal & got my $ back in 10 days.
