Hot Rods Favorite Picture That Says “HotRod”

That looks like it is going to hurt! I hope the driver and p***enger were okay.

 

I got the pic off of fb,I hope theyre ok also...but the pic just screams hot rod,as dangerous as they can get

This is the first picture from the ad for my '30, everything about it screamed "hot rod" to me. It took about 3 years to make a deal but it finally came home with me a few months ago.


I've changed a few things since then and now every picture says "That's MY hot rod"!

 

Not just a "Hot Rod", but also the men of "Hot Rodding", taken by the "Hot Rod" Photographer, Eric "Rick" Rickman.... Doesn't git better than that!!!

It was a long time ago, but I took this photo as part of a feature for a mag. But, it was the camaraderie of the whole hot rod scene that led to the photo shoot. I got down as low as possible and used the 35mm film camera pointed at the chopped Model A Sedan Delivery. There were only a few shots like this and every hot rod to this point, did not have the standard ¾ requisite photo angle, let alone a ¾ angle shot from the ground.

We chose an area that had little to interject into the photos at any angle. No photo altering programs to get rid of the intruding backgrounds. The editors liked the Model A style, but it was this photo that made them use the photos for a short story.

I have been fortunate in meeting some great people and this hot rod build, (wherever it is today… somewhere in the S.F. Bay Area) led me to improve my photo techniques.

Back in the 1970’s, I was finally in a position to build my vision of a Hot Rod, a 1930 Model A coupe. This was when the Street Rod movement was all the rage…. Along with much better ch***is components & design, came cars with the emphasis on comfort & reliability- some guys were using 4 or 6 cylinder engines, rather than a readily available V8. Resto-Rods were also in style, during this time.

Eddie Lawson had just started up his rod shop (Eddie’s Rod Shop), here in Kingsport, TN. When I bought my Pete & Jake’s ch***is components, I told Eddie that I was building a Hot Rod, rather than a Street Rod. I had no intention of being concerned about how comfortable the car was or making cross country trips in it, hauling luggage, etc. I had no interest in incorporating a trailer hitch or mounting fenders.

When I finally was able to get the car driveable, the first destination was Eddie’s Rod Shop (just a few miles from my home). It was a warm, sunny day. Eddie’s shop doors were open and he heard me drive up (straight pipes, no mufflers). I was getting out of the car when Eddie walked to the door, saw me & the car and remarked “Now, that’s a Hot Rod “. That acknowledgment made my day.
