I picked this wagon up as my new family car a few weeks ago.

The wood paneling is what really sold me.

Does anyone know what materials are actually used here? I know the darker part isn't real wood...is it some vaneer type material like you would find on cheap kitchen cabnets?

What about the outer molding (see pic). It appears to be some sort of fiberglass... is that correct??? Looks like it can be sanded down and then faux painted to look like wood. Is that the way they did it back then?

Does anyone in So Cal specialize in restoring wood paneling?

Send a PM to Jdee. He's the man that knows everything about woodgraining and woody wagons. I guarantee he can tell you whatever you want to know and possibly redo the woodgrain shit for you if that's what you want to do.

I'm guessing that the darker part is NiDoc, a woodgrained vinyl veneer and the other pieces are fiberglass mouldings made to look like a wood surround which were originally painted with a faux wood finish in a lighter contrasting color. It's definitely restorable to it's original wood look, a very cool wagon.

  4. Try JC whitney. I bought two rolls for mine. Here's some pictures of mine. Original Calif car. I'm the second owner. 62,000 miles 396, 400 turbo, 373 posi rear, factory air, power brakes, power steering, and power rear window. It's all original paint, never been hit. I removed the woodgrain because it was peeling. I drove it a lot before I moved to Missouri. I quit driving it in Calif. right before I moved because I was always asked if it was for sale. Guys even knocked on the door at home to try and buy it. I was worried it would get stolen. It's been driven 18 miles in the four years I've been here, Dean (ps) it's in the background of the roadster picture.

    Thanks guys.

133: I dig the roof rack? It's part of my family man "Wonder Years" throw back thaaaang.

Basic plan is to level out that rear end so that it sits lower... the stance is a little to street rod looking right now. Ultimatley I'd like to lighten the colorsof the wood and paint it a medium tone orange.

SQUABLOW: Thanks forthe info. I'll connect with Jdee as soon as I can scrounge up some mula.

Cool shit...How difficlut is it to pull that stuff off? Is it like peeling wallpaper? What did you use to do it?

Now I'm thinking that I will remove the dark stuff in the middle and keep the outertrim as a wooded frameoutlining the inner panel

    Cool wagon.
I have used wood stain on the moldings in the past. It is just a quick cheap alternitive to replacing it all.

  10. Warm up your goin in. The decals are an adhesive backed vynil. Removal of the decals is relatively easy . Warm the panel with a heat gun or other source. get an edge and pull. There may be some adhesive residue left. There is a decal adhesive remover.Check with your local PBE supply ,3M makes the remover and replacement decals that for the body panels . Check out www.stripeman.com they have the decals, prices and installation procedures on line. They may not match the originals but there is something that should get you close. As far as the rails go ,Their a composite plastic. Use the same procedure as if your going to refinish a piece of fibreglass. Mediablast and paint a base color .You'll have to paint wood grain on the rails.

Installing the decals can be a pain in the ass. The new decal kits come with instructions. Make sure to read them and follow them closely. Any part of the panel that the decal adheres to must be exteremly clean , especially the inside edges of the doors and all jambs. The decals are recommended to be applied wet with a soapy water solution . Make sure your hands are also wet with the solution before touching the decal. Bending the decal around curves and edges is not something easily learned and takes several attempts to familiarize yourself with the material and its characteristics. Best suggestion remove them yourself and take it to the local body shop. The decals are not cheap. Last time I looked they were around $125.00 per panel.

If you decide to do them yourself ,be careful as you will never be able to get out of wallpapering any of the walls in your residence , especially if shes sees you did a great job.

If you know someone at a sign shop, they can print it on vinyl.

    Call C. D. Hall at 562-714-9118
He's been doing show car quality wood graining and faux finishes for over 40 years.
He's in Long Beach, near where the Monster Garage usta be.

Yes, he re-does a lot of long roofs, Packard restorations, Chevys, Caddys and Fords, any car's interior garnish, wheelchairs, cel phones, everything...
He'll even woodgrain wood...like in old Jags or Bentleys with wood trim that's gone past needing just a fresh coat of varnish.

On that car, you probably want to repaint it first, because it needs it, and the woodgraining is the LAST thing in the order you want to do it when refinishing it.
When you take it off, don't lose any of that trim, I charge C.D. a bundle to make copys of missing trim pieces and you pay big $$$ :D
He works in paint, not that vinyl but if you want the same wood style, he'll need to see it before you strip it.

Call C.D. and see what he can do for you...
He's a one man operation so he needs to "schedule" jobs.
    Know what I mean?

Ditto.... Jeremy was great and the wagon will be well taken care of. I've been busy the last couple of wekends so I haven't really done much more than park it in the driveway. I can't wait to really get into it in the next few weeks.

Well, Goozgaz, I'm going as well because I, too, am laughing where I sit. Spicoli, you are a sick and demented individual. Can you come out and play?

I would most definetly NOT get rid of the roof rack. The roof rack is part of the whole package that makes that car tits, and removing it would be a detraction rather than an improvement.

    Keep the rack.

Woodgrain is a super-simple effect to do in paint. You just need to practice first. If you have any competency with a spray gun at all, PM me and I can give you some pointers.

I wish I had some pictures of the boat my dad wood-grained for his boss. It's fiberglass but he did the WHOLE thing up as a wooden boat. It took less than a day and most people that see it think it's wood, even after walking up and inspecting it closely.
