To be fair he didn't say whether he had an engine or not. If no engine then your starting with a clean slate right?

As several have said, Chevelle mounts are what you are looking for. Chevelle headers or manifolds will work for exhaust.

Then buy a Chevy if you want cheap.

Count me a**** those who cringe at the thought of a Chevy in a Poncho, although at least it’s not an LS.

You can hot rod a 64 GTO with Pontiac power.

  9. I think there have been as many Chevy powered GTO's as there have been Pontiac powered '55 Chevys.
Some years ago I helped a guy put a 427 in a '67 LeMans. I remember it being fairly straight foward with Chevelle parts. Of course, we could go the the local Chevy dealer and get the parts back then. There was some wiring to be done, because of the starter being on the other side of the motor. But it worked pretty easy and was really fast. At least, it seemed like it was. Gene.

Some of you guys really make me wonder if I'm still on a Hot Rod forum or the Ford Barn.... for crying-out-loud .... we have been swapping every brand of engine into everything under the sun for 75 years, why would we stop now?

You should be ashamed of yourselves.

When I was in High school there were several Chevies in town running 389 and 421 Pontiacs. This GTO swap is a natural. Some people worry to much about how much cars are worth... I say lets have fun with cars instead!!!

I helped a high school buddy install a 396 in a '64 Tempest back in 1973 using Chevelle parts. Easy peasy.

A buddy of mine has a bad *** period correct looking 64 GTO with a 496 chevy under the hood. He was at a local Pontiac show and Jim Wangers walks up and starts talking about his car saying how nice it was, Then he glances under the hood and see's the bbc painted Pontiac blue.....He stopped talking did an about face and walked away:D

So would a ‘65 Vette with a 396 be a muscle car? And I thought the muscle car thing started a few years after the OPs GTO, like late 60’s?

I went to HS with a guy with a '66 GTO with a 427 Chevy swap. Needless to say, it was a rocket. So cut the guy some slack. He's probably not flush enough to source a 389 or 455 core. Then from there parts are expensive over a 454 Chevy.

I've always heard the 64 GTO was the original muscle car.

Could be, I’d always thought it was later years the term was coined for. But it’s too late, early? Home from a night shift, for me to do the Google thing;)

To be fair he didn't receive a very warm welcoming.

  29. Why all the hate on the muscle car. I'm guessing most on here either had one, wanted one, or tried to make their daily (at the time) into one using good old 'hotrod' ingenuity. I remember hearing the phrase 'factory hotrod' bantered about. Back in the day, muscle cars were what you drove to work to earn the money you were dumping on your hotrod. If you worked your *** off, planned and fabricated well enough, and dumped a ton of your hard earned cash on your hotrod, you had something that was almost as fast, and almost handled and rode as good your 'work' car.

No hate. In fact I have one.

This isn’t the place to talk about them, though.
