Hello, I have a 52 Crestline Victoria. I want to convert to 12 volt. I know they have the alternator that looks like the original generator. I don’t want to loose the originality but I want the upgrades that come along with 12 volts. Now the question/ When converting to 12 volt, my vehicle has overdrive. Do I have to buy the overdrive upgrade kit, or is that just an upsale. does anyone have suggestions on what route to take when upgrading?
To keep your overdrive functioning you'll need a 12V relay (a standard Bosch 5-pin will work) and the 12V solenoid, not a low buck part. Everything else related to the OD can remain.
And I'll point out if switching to a 'alternator-in-generator-disguise' you're giving up one of the major upgrades of an alternator, which is increased output. All of those I've seen only put out 30 amps, which is typically what a generator puts out. They also tend to overheat to the point of failure if ran at or close to max output as the generator shell design compromises proper cooling.
You should probably read and save this too. https://darksidersrealm.forumotion....lt-positive-ground-to-12-volt-negative-ground
Jeff is too modest to suggest it so I will you may think about joining his social group.not all of your questions will be answered possibly.on the other hand it is a group dedicated too 52-59 Fords.it is also on the Hamb so no worries of going to a strange and possibly dangerous site
I have converted my 1951 Mercury to 12 volts and I have used the 6 volt overdrive solenoid for years without an issue.
@Crazy Steve Thanks! The price of the alternator is up there for only being 30 volts and over heating. The flat runs hot as it is. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to upgrade to 12 volts. I want to add a fan, better lights, and on.

Gonna upgrade to 12 volt with modern alternator so I can add electric fans. alos want to add AC. any suggestions
Clean the connections and grounds, make sure your battery cables are up to standard, buy an Optima battery, and save youself a lot of trouble. I notice you mentioned "electric fans". Does your car have an engine swap? Makes a difference.
