I was reading an article in an old Street Rodder magazine about dad's 32 roadster. Seems Baskerville's car had some colorful artwork done in the door jambs which wasn't suitable for print in a family magazine. Does anybody know what it was? Pics?
I have seen the roadster in question quite a few times over the years but this is the FIRST time I ever heard about non PG door jamb work. Could be...........I never looked for it.
I'll talk to my buddy Mike who worked for Art Chrisman for 6 or 7 years. He was redoing a bunch of stuff on it at Arts when Gray got really sick and p***ed away. He was telling me that when Gray got sick and they knew he wasn't gonna be round much longer,Art,Mike and Mike finished the car and they took it over to Grays place.Art took Gray for a blast in the car and I think it was that night or the next day he p***ed on.Kewl send off eh.....Shiny
This is four years on, but someone told me about this thread. I guess better's late than never, so here goes. The characatures came from Tom Otis, and they're at the top of each door jamb.
The really cool part of Ole Dads send off was when his ashes came out of Als chute at 405. I have a tape of it and it brings a tear everytime I see it.
Thanks ... greenfuzz ... for posting the photos ... I saw the car a few times and did not remember seing them ... Cool car ...
Very welcome, kids; glad this stuff is still capable of inducing a smile or two. If the following image ran in the magazine, it was too small to do the subject any justice. It's one of the roll bar mounts (driver's side) Paul Horning and/or Ernie Murishige installed in the mid-to-late '50s, when Paul got himself in trouble racing the car. For whatever reason it got overlooked/ignored, and it's still in the car, untouched, looking as it did when the car had the partial black interior decades ago. A good friend of mine whom i respect (and who knows better and who shall remain nameless) called Horning/Baskerville's car a '70s street rod. Make no mistake, that roadster is no street rod; it's a hot rod, and this is proof.
A hot rod indeed and so shall it remain ! Having known the senior Mr. Shelton since high school , I don't doubt for a moment the story he told of purchasing 'Ol Grayeye's duece . As Gray knew his journey here was just about over,he offered it to somebody he knew would take care of and enjoy his "P.O.S." (Gray's affectionate term for his roadster ) . He has and will .---- Jim ,"Pop's" newer Maroon car is not a prom queen either rather a " Magic Carpet" he has racked some 50,000 miles on it criss-crossing the U.S A. . The motto is , "if'n you see my car on a trailer it's broke or being stolen ! "
It's funny to see this roll bar shot as I literally grew up directly accross the street from Ernie Murashige of M&V Automotive Pasadena & Rolling Rice Bowl Fame. Gray recieved this car in the kinda way any one of us would not want to. Paul Horning (Rolling Rice Bowl driver #1-2)was killed in an car accident. From what Ernie said, was that the 32 went to him, he felt kinda wierd about it so in the meantime Gray wanted it & Ernie knew that Paul had a young son that was gonna need a college education someday so he asked him to take care of something like that for him.(Gray came from a publishing family) So hence Gray ended up with the roadster. Susan Baskerville knew of her husbands wishes for it so after Eric Vaughn did the Gray Display @ Deuce Day @ the Petersen the car was then sold to Jim=a hell of a nice guy!. The Rolling Rice Bowl 3 ended up in Ernies possesion, but Ernie decided to sell it to Bob Vacca who displays around So Cal events with much of Grays photog work. Side note here, What ever happened to the 265 that Paul had in the car when he p***ed on & when Jerry Kugel built Gray a replacement??? Hint=Went into a very famous roadster as was dressed. Did that tour of duty till 1997 & wore 9 fin Vette valve covers - still does Ever see a Funky Fo Dor 34 Hi boy C-dan that used to belong to Carl Johansen and now piloted by a 1/2 of a very famous hot rod repair & later parts company former owner now located out of state? Give up It's Jake! Gray gave it to him if he'd pull the flatty out of the Niekamp and make a driver out of it again as the flatty was way tired & Jake needed a change. I miss Gray's Giggle & when we're sitting down for dinner @ sema & he just p*** wind & ask Thom Taylor if he had too many beans He was just a very nice guy.
Thanx Kevin!! ... Nice stories you shared I used my high school lunch-money to buy "Hot Rod magazine" in the seventies . Magazines are gone , but every page that Gray had his name on was saved... Klaz ( stole this cool pic on the net ( R&C -Mag )... Please don`t hang me for my theaft .. )
