    Hello,

When our dad came home one afternoon, he was driving a cool 2 door Buick Roadmaster sedan. Now, both my brother and I had a strong liking for this sedan. Not only did it have a cool dark blue color, but it was a 2 door sedan. All three of his last Buick sedans were 4 door road hogs and supposed family cars.

My brother had his two door 58 Impala and we guessed our dad wanted something that looked cool, like a 2 door sedan.

It was big and blue. At first, we thought it would not fit in the narrow garage driveway. But, with carefully slow creeping, the big blue got its way into the right side of the small 2 car garage. When my brother and i took it for a drive around the neighborhood, it had some power, too.

The Buick was always on the right side and the 1951 Oldsmobile was on the other. But, when the Oldsmobile was gone, we had to modify the front of the closet to get the Impala to fit correctly, so we could close the main garage door. NOTE: The shiny rear roof vent on the Impala sitting on the left side of the garage.

So my brother and I did talk about customizing our dad’s 57 Buick. It was big and roomy inside. But he loved driving, so we did not do anything to the overall looks. We offered to put on some Skylark Wire Wheels, but he was told the balancing and daily driving on freeways would not be the best thing for his Buick. Our secret goal was to be able to “borrow” the 57 Buick with Skylark wire wheels for our weekend cruising. Ha!

The idea of long chrome side lakes pipes would give the big Buick some custom touches. Despite the large driver’s door, our dad had a hard time getting in the drivers seat. His bad back always gave him difficulties, although our suggestion of getting comfortable fully adjustable bucket seats did not impress him.

We even showed the “no adjustment” of his Buick seats and that everyone had to sit in those nearly 90 degree uncomfortable seat backs for long drives. Back then, people equated squishy seats for comfort, although the body was not made for sitting at that angle for long periods of time. We took him to a upper level foreign car showroom to have him sit in comfy adjustable bucket seats. He was impressed, but stuck to his Buick seating.

So, to ease the entry and exit, we suggested suicide doors. Ha! But, it was the elimination of some chrome and Frenched headlights that actually got our dad somewhat interested in a drawing we did. not good, but he got the picture. (pun intended)

  5. Thanks everyone. 20160908_204937(0).jpg Jnaki, I liked your story, and pictures. Here's a sketch of a Buick that I would like to see someone build.

  6. Also Jigger, I liked your little Met, and sweetie! You are one of the best Hot Rod artist. Here's a very, very, old one that I did many years ago. Yeah, I was one of those Roth boomer kids. 1431.jpg

I enjoy playing in the space between abstraction and representation.

There was a time period in this country, when there was real attention to detail, on the various emblems and badges and trim. I really miss those days. These are some of those pieces that caught my eye at various car shows. Thanks from Dennis, to all that contribute weekly to the "FAS"

I made an acrylic top for it and used shortened bar stool legs and made it into a table

A portion of the wall in my old garage. The wall and collage were 45 feet long by 14 feet high. A lot of magazines and calendars gave there all for the manic wall
